Does Canada charge duty on Yamaha sleds imported from US?

Has anyone imported a late-model Yamaha sled into Canada from the US in the last year or two? Just want to know if Canada Revenue Agency actually charges duty on them. Did a search but couldn't find anything specific on just the duty part - everything is about the RIV process and I already know about that. Japanese vehicles aren't covered under NAFTA normally but I thought that if Yamaha sleds are assembled in the US that would be a different story. If anyone with first hand experience can let me know that would be great.

Importing sled to Canada

My nephew bought a 2003 polaris last year from Minnesota. Had to pay duty or tax on the purchase price at border. Also had to leave sled there at US customs for 3 days to make sure no liens against it and it was clear of debt and not stolen. Hope this helps.
 
Thanks but that doesn't really help. Polaris sleds are made in the US and there is no duty on USA or Canadian made vehicles because of the Free Trade Agreement. What he paid was probably GST/PST/HST plus the RIV fee. Duty might apply to Yamaha sleds if they are built in Japan but it might not if they are assembled in the US using Japanese parts. That's what I'm trying to find out.
 
Ive imported a couple of yamahas now a 97 sx700 and a 01 srx. If you find the right sled and know the buyer you can save leaving it in the usa for the 72 hours by getting him to send you the bill of sale to us customs. Once recieved they have their 72 hours to check for leans or whatever there looking for. You must stop at US customs to get your bill of sale stamped. Then take the sled to the canadain border, pay your gst on the bill of sale price. Once they complete thier forms you have a month or so to pay the 218.00 riv (registration or imported vechicles) fee. And take it to your local DMV where you pay your pst. and your good to go. They may require a recall letter which is as easy as calling yamaha canada. Shouldnt Have to pay duty..or at least i never have...Hope this covers it lol..
 
orchie18 covered it! Check out "RIV" program, should provide all necessary info. Taxes (both) and RIV fee are all I had to pay ( done it twice). Recall notice from Yamaha Canada may also be required. Hope that helps!
 
Cool, thanks. Just trying to get an idea about duty and it sounds like I won't have to pay any - just HST and RIV fee (which is $220 including HST now). I imported 8 vehicles through the RIV within the last 6 months so I'm very familiar with the process plus I have access to a warehouse on the other side for the border for the 72 hour wait. Just didn't know if they charged duty on Yamaha sleds since they are Japanese. I know they charge duty on foreign cars so I thought they might on foreign sleds too.
 
I just brought an FX Nytro up from the US yesterday and I was NOT charged duty. For that to be the case it must fall under NAFTA which must mean their location of final assembly is in the US or Canada somewhere. I was only charged GST at the border and I will be charged PST when I register it at Service Ontario. Of course I'll have to pay the RIV fee too.

blue... where you getting parts from?... seems when ever my order exceeds $100 US, I get slammed PST, GST, Duty and an import fee, which is now, $8.50 per shipment...
