01 Vmax 600 Triple Compression Question

Hello all! I have just purchased a 2001 Vmax 600 Triple..I did a compression test before it was bought all three cyl's read 130psi. Sled is in immaculate condition, BUT has 18,000 KM. I am wondering is this compression normal? What should I expect to get out of the engine before a rebuild?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thats really great compression. You might even have a single layer gasket in there. Normally I see around 120s. You should be able to get 8 to 10 thousand miles on a motor if it well taken care of.

Thank you for the info MrSled! From what I am to understand (from the p/o) the engine has never been apart, and has always used synthetic oil (not Yamaha brand). My other sled 99' Vmax 500 twin has 130 psi compression as well, BUT.. was rebuild by my local dealer at 14,000km. Any reason why the 500 would need to be rebuilt at 14k and my new 600 triple is still going strong? And what do you mean by a single layer gasket?

The headgssket is a 3 piece design (3 layers) and to effectively raise the compression you can remove either one or two layers.. This is (cheap easy way) done so that you don't have to send your head to a machine shop and have it milled.

Exactly Not sure why you would rebuild an engine with that good of compression... its a wast of money unless the compression has dropped to 100 or less with high miles. One thing to remember not all gauges read the same so maybe his or your gauge reads high.

The 500 was rebuilt by my local dealer before I bought it last year (sorry i should have specified) I am not sure what the compression was before it was rebuilt. I was just curious why the 600 triple engine with 18000KM has the same compression as a freshly rebuilt engine?

Please bare with me as I am new to the sport. I hope I have made some sense now.

you must got one of Yamaha's Top Secret motors there.It wasn't supposed to be installed in a consumer sled..It is one of them 2 stroke's that was an experiment and would go something like 40,000 km/s without a rebuild.It was just before a 4 stroke motor was introduced on their sleds.Lucky you..

you really didn't believe that did you...lol You are damn lucky a motor could have that many kms without rebuild.I think I rebuilt my SXR 600 motor in around 11,000 kms.Mind you I probably could have keep her going to 18,000 easily.But I ride wot all the time..just thought it was time.I am sure your pistons and rings are worn down good now..anything could happen any time now..

I just about fell out of my chair haha. Any signs i should watch out for with all this high mileage? Any noises or anything?? I REALLY don't want the motor to be out of service half the winter when all the buddies are out riding. I am not a rough rider, I usually take it easy and I only trail ride.

Just check all of the bearings in the suspension and the drive axle bearings...

Would it be safe to ride this season and wait to do a rebuild over the summer? If the rings were worn wouldn't there be lower compression? Should I keep a close eye on the compression over the winter or do a rebuild now? I might be a bit over paranoid, but I really do not want a meltdown to deal with this year.

Wouldnt be a bad idea to hit up your freinds, freinds of freinds and check comp with a couple different gauges. Correct process for checking compression is pull all plugs and WOT 3 pulls. If its consisantly better than 110......RIDE AND ENJOY!

Compression is 120-122 psi across the cylinders so it is good to go. I did the head gasket mod by putting in new custom made gaskets from Cometic, air box mod, silencer mod, clutching from Turk and regearing and the thing just keeps on going and going and going. A friend that I ride with is on his third new Polaris since I bought my SX. He used to give me grief that I need to buy a new sled because this one has to many miles on it. A few weeks ago he asked If I know anyone that has an older SX or SXR for sale because HE wants to get one now so that he has a dependable sled that he wont' have to replace in two years!!!!

One thing I noticed is around the exhaust gasket by the engine seems to have some black oily crap along the bottom. Is it leaking?? Normal?? Something that can cause problems down the road..?

Some is normal on a sled with some miles and it shouldn't give you much trouble.If its really wet around there you could put a new gasket in there and make sure the manifold is straight.You could just make sure all bolts are tight also.
