carbs just cleaned, how often should i start sled before winter?

mechanic just cleaned my carbs and got it ready for winter......60 degrees in upstate ny today, not looking like any winter coming any time soon....how often should i start my sled so that i dont have to pay mechanic to clean carbs again? how long does it take for carbs to get dirty w/sled sitting? i have 10%ethanol in our gas here..thanks
 
Ideally you dont want to run the sled at all untill your ready to ride for the season. I just got done cleaning all of mine and wont even touch them till im ready to ride. The carbs should be fine till then. That shouldnt be enough time to varnish, and the ethanol is a "cleaner of sorts" anyway. Just goes bad quick. If it were mine i would just drain the gas and use it in the mower or truck then put fresh gas in it when time to ride. May even want to run a little stabil through it first then drain, wouldnt hurt. Just make sure you run it long enough to get to running temp so all the moisture is out of the enging. Just starting a sled as a way to keep things "fresh" is the worst thing you can do for a engine. chris
 
Don't start it often and don't leave it empty. It may sound like 3 different answers to 1 question but I've tried them all and this works best.

Fill the tank with gas and add Sta-bil "Marine Formula" (made for ethanol) then run it until it's warm and shut it down. Take out the plugs, put half a cap full of new motor oil in each cylinder, pull the chord once to rotate the pistons, reinstall the plugs and leave it for the summer. Of course there's other stuff like greasing the suspension, loosing tension on track, blocking air box, etc...

This crap Ethanol fuel wouldn't be bad except that it's made from corn and can grow Algae very quickly. That's the green crap in your carb bowls after long storage.

I ran my 2 sleds on the stands the other day..got the motors nice and hot and rotated track for a while..all is good.After 3 weeks of standing..as usual the SXR 600 starts up befort 1 pull is done..the SRX..well took 8 pulls to start.Go figure..but the 600 has always been a great starter from day one.
 
I always just shut the gas off and run the carbs dry... works sometimes. But i live in an area with alot of addatives for emmissions and such so i try to run gas from other counties on my last ride. Whitch ushually doesnt happen cause i end up riding on my lake anyways! :D
 
This is one of the many reason I switch to a 4T.

I used to pull the carbs and clean at the end of the season, leave them dry all summer long (not sure is the best thing to do) and drain as much gas fromt he tank as possible. Then late fall, install, grease, fill the tank with fresh gas and wait for snow to fly....JMO

nothing like getting your hands dirty.Most of the fun on a 2 stroke is wrenching on it...imagine if you didn't have carbs to clean anymore..that would be boring..lol

...Taunting us like that!! I'm going to start charging you for the smell of my 2-stroke when you start to miss that smell...
