I am finally tearing down and repairing my 1998 Vmax 700 redhead that burned down the mag side piston. Have jug, piston, wrist pin bearing, circlips etc all ready to go.

The sled was eating oil the day it burned down but I was too much of a newb to stop and figure out what was happening.

It appears that at some point the head gasket blew, oil sprayed out the mag side cylinder into the hood, but I don't know if that was the cause of the detonation or the result of the detonation.

So one theory is oil pump malfunction leading to detonation. How do I check for oil pump function? How do I fix it if its broke?

Another theory is blown head gasket leading to detonation. (I have new head gasket)

Another theory is dirty carbs leading to detonation. (I plan on cleaning carbs)

Any other possible causes I am missing?

Thanks!

crank seals????? Loose or rubber boots that came off carbs.Had that happen once..you will know it by the sound when you punch the throttle..not good.So I stopped to pop it back on and away I went.I was in deep powder with the SRX and had it pinned to get the hell out of there and the rubber boot came off 1 carb.I stopped as soon as I could and found it.May habe blown 1 cyl if kept going..

Going through the carbs tomorrow.

Got the piston and jug in place.

Compression is 120(new cylinder) /118/118 so pretty satisfied with that.

Will check the carbs tomorrow...
