I was trying to pull my clutch off because it was cracked and the puller bent and screwed my threads up in the end of the Crankshaft on my 98 SRX 700. How can I fix this? Can I helicoil it? Dam I'm so pissed!!
Any help is Appreciated!!!
Thanks,
Chris

to many guys have had bad luck with aftermarket pullers...glad I bought one from my Dealers years back..it is still going strong. You might be in a little bit of trouble here..ask a machinist in your area if there is a proper way to fix this .Don't try anything crazy at this point or it may cost you a new crankshaft and motor being torn apart.Get some professional advice first...
PS: I would really be pissed also at this point...

The thread is 1/2 inch fine sae get a good quality bottoming tap and chase the threads use oil and then some carb cleaner to get the chips out with a little air commpressor help to blow the junk out then survey the damage it may not be that bad.

I would definately tap/clean the threads before trying any drilling
I wonder why its not metric?

Good question, everything I've ever touched on a yamaha is in metric.

I'll stop by Fastenal today and pick a tap up. Only problem clutch is still on the sled and I don't have a puller. Anyone have a good yamaha puller they would be willing to sell?

IF EVERYTHING FAILS, YOU MIGHT HAVE TO CUT IT OFF. 3:16 (yammie tony)
The 1/2 inch thread was a standard started way back in the day and used by about all manufacuerers polaris used a 7/16 thread, now some like skidoo and the polaris liberty use a metric thread.

I had a similar problem on the flywheel side, that thing is on there. I had the puller just about ready to snap. Had to heat the thing pretty good with an oxy-acetylene torch for it to come off.
Heat the clutch, spray that liquid cooler on the shaft. Not sure what the material is, never really looked at the primary closely, so if you do use heat, be careful if its aluminum.
Antiseize will make it a breeze for next time.

aha 1/2 UNF? I think that Yamaha have M18x1,5mm, but maybe I´m wrong check it out before you totally ruin the threads in the crank.
Sorry before you ruin the threads in the clutch i mean, but this is if you have a yamaha clutch. If the clutch is another brand you should check with the clutch manufacturer what puller you should use.

swede has a very good point. did you actually screw up the threads in the crank that the bolt that holds the clutch on threads into or the threads in the clutch where the puller threads into?

they are not the same the puller would tighten the clutch on if that was the case
