i just bought a 2001 yamaha sxr600 and it runs great but it smokes alot, i checked the plugs and they look like there burning rlly nice. It seems to smoke mainly after the engine warms up. Also when i brought the sled home i noticed the radiator overflow bottle was empty so i filled it up and the levels gone down some but it seemed to have stoped droping. Does anyone know why my sled smokes? Could it be burning antifreez?
Thanks, Derek

Check the oil pump adjustment (do a search on the site) you will find tons of info. It might be bad or just need to be adjusted.
Also if the previus owner summerized it properly it will be normal for the sled to smoke for a few miles....
Some of the things I wil go thru after purchasing a used sled:
Carbs (remove, clean and inspect)
Chaincase (replace fluid and chain, or at least inspect closely)
Grease all the fittings.
Check wheels for loose bearings.
Belt and clutches (remove, clean and inspect)
I could go on forever but this will get you started.
JMO, somebody else will add more.....

Burning antifreeze has a unique smell, kinda sweet and pure white in color.

i will check the oil pump altho id think the spark plugs would show if it was geting too much oil. it very well could be that its just been summerized. the exhaust does smell sweet but its runing klotz oil wich smells sweet. The smoke is whiteish too.

i went over the sled for 2 days after i got it, i cleaned the carbs wich were a mess to begin with!! the chain case clearly wasnt ever adjusted before and was beyond loose, no one has ever greased the fittings sence i emptied half a cartrige of grease, the clutch was recently rebuilt and it has a brand new belt on it. I can say that the owner before me never did any maintence on the sled tho.

Observe that overflow tank when running. If it's bubbling, there is a blown head gasket.
