On a 1975 gpx 338 how do set or adjust ignition timing for racing. In the past I usually just put everything back together like I took it apart. Now Iam putting bigger carbs, pipes for racing and wonder if advacing the timing will help performance and how to do it. Thanks for the help

to adjust ,you move the stator plate and use a dial indicator on the piston top.

With that being said, do you know how much you want to advance the timing and why? advancing the ign. timing puts more heat into the piston top, so its easier to have detonation and burn a hole in the piston top. Retarded timing puts more heat into the pipe. You need a certain amount of heat into the pipe for the pipe to let the engine produce max rpm, too cold of a pipe= equals low rpm, too hot isnt any better, it all needs to work together.
