you have to remove the stator it fits on the case ends should be 3 phillips bolts holding it on.

WooHoo, got the cases apart. checked the tolerances on the rods and did a visual inspection on the bearings, and they look OK. filled the gear room with oil, and oiled all the rod pivot points, and bearings. Lined everything up & bolted it all back together. Then flipped the motor over & pulled the head back off & pulled the cylinders to inspect them. Two of the cylinders have minor scoring on the one side as do the pistons in the cylinders, but I don't think that they are bad. I was told by the guy that I got the motor from that there was 135psi on all three cylinders. Bolted everything back together, torqued everything, reinstalled the magneto and flywheel. Put the motor in for the first time. Hooked up the oil line and vacuum line for the fuel pump. Getting closer.

Looks like that head was overheated at some point, (burnt red colour) that is maybe where some of the scoring in the cylinders came from.

I am looking for a primary for this project, hoping that somebody may have an extra one laying around somewhere. It has to have the weights, rollers, & spring. As I dont have anything but the bolt for the primary. Also, looking for a decent 121x15 track. This one is in rough shape. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Nice job on the frame I have one in the back of my house that someone cut, might have to have you fix it for me.
Any questions you have don't be afraid to put them on here. Everyone is here to help.
Good luck!

That crank picture shows why Yamaha engines are so great! My old Polaris and Ski-doo's had bearings HALF that size and had to be replaced with every set of rings. It was ridiculous, just about every other year was $500 in parts. My old Yamaha Exciter went 6500 miles with no engine repairs, my 03 RX-1 went 5500 before selling it with no repairs and my "new" 97 Vmax 700 has 6800 miles and is waiting for snow with new rings but all the bearings looked great!
Here's the pages from the service manual for testing the coils:

Back from the holidays, ughh stressful. Got the carbs cleaned. I forget is it 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 turns out on the pilots? I picked up a stator from Kimpex. Are these a good replacement for OEM, it says they meet or exceed OEM? Also got a clutch & mirrors from another 700 vmax. Now it is time to clean up the clutch good & install it. Tested out all the other switches on the handlebars, key switch, & coils. Everything tests out ok. Hopefully I get a chance to work on it this weekend, & get her running. Where is the snow at this winter. Only got about 6" back in October. That has been all this season. Kind of depressing. Rebuilt snowmobile and plow for truck this season & nothing. Ughhh. Will post pics later.

I would return that stator and replace it with a the yamaha oem one. Just had 2 guys here go with aftermarket and had problems with running.

Stock setting on the air/fuel screw is 1-1/2 turns out from lightly seated. The pilot jet gets screwed in until it's seated, don't leave the jets loose.

Put the stator in last night, we now have spark. Hooked up the plugs, Put the silencer in with all those crazy springs. Drilled & temporarily mounted the mirrors.
Took primary apart so that I can do a good cleaning on it today. Now, when is it going to snow in central PA. lol

OK, got her up and running. Brakes are bled, coolant is filled, oil in the resorvoir, gas in the tank. Carbs are tweeked. Took it out for a few laps in the wet green grass. Honey, what happened to the grass in the yard? Oh never mind. I found it in the rear flap & underside of the tunnel. Hehehe. Tors switch isnt working. I had to unhook it for now. Still isnt running quite right. It seems to be missing a little bit. Off to get some fresh plugs we will see how it runs then.

Vmax breaking up in the top end
Didnt get a chance to get new plugs yet. Did manage to get it out of the garage though. Still sounds like its breaking up in the top end, around 7500-8000 rpm. I am going to take off the carbs & go through them again. I am also going to try a different set of plugs. Not like it matters, no snow in the future anyways. Got to get it ready for the short time that we have snow when we get it.

The stator from Kimpex wasnt working. I got a used one from another member. Now we are up and running. Its running pretty good. The TORS is also working. Now can we please get some snow so that I can get some time on this thing so that I can check everything out. Does anybody know where I can get a cable joint for the speedometer gear assembly?
