comet 108 c ss440 clutch

just got a comet 108 c today,believe it was originally on a ss 440? did they come from the factory with these? only number i can see is 21400 anyhow i need a mounting bolt, and was wondering if anyone knew where i could find one,and if this is possibly a metric bolt?
any info would be great
 
YAMAHA VMAX 540 CAME WITH 102 C. YAMAHA FELT THESE CLUTCHES WERE WAY MORE DURABLE ON THEIR GO FAST SLED THAN THE YAMAHA CLUTCHES. THAT ACTUALLY WORKED GOOD BUT NEED ALOT OF MAINTENANCE. 3:16 (yammie tony)
 
As Tony said no 108's came on any Yamaha.

Only 102's and only on the 540 Vmax.

Comet sold 108's as a replacement for the 102 on the 540 Vmax as they couldn't sell the 102 because of their contract to sell them to Yamaha. Guys that run a 108 on a Vmax have a lot of troubles getting them to perform as well as the original 102.

The 108 is an overdrive clutch. The 102 and the stock SS primary are not so stock secondary on your SS doesn't match it very well. You will likely run into belt stretching issues near full shift that will be very troublesome amongst other things. They can be made to work with a bunch of messing around but I don't see any advantage in running one without an overdrive secondary to match. I've never been impressed with the longevity of any Comet so if your just trail riding it I would get the right Yamaha clutch for an SS and be done with it. If maintained it will work/last as long as the Comet.

Yamaha used the 102c on all Vmax 540's and 83-84 SRV's. They also used 108c on the 88-89 Exciter High elevation sleds, the regular Exciters used the YPZ clutch.
Comet sold the 102c replacement for the Vmax part# 212215 up until they came out with the 108c then they superseded it to the 108c. If you set up the 108 with a different secondary that will except the overdrive then there is a big performance gain and set up the primary to get the right shift rpm and engagement they work fine . I use a Polaris secondary but you can use a Yamaha reverse cam and not have to change the jackshaft.
The SS440 and all other Yamaha used Yamaha clutches.

thanks for the info guys,i bought this for a gpx 433 but would run into the same problems installing it.
so the modern yammie reverse cam's will work on the older jackshafts??
 
no the 95 and new secondary will not just bolt on .............go back to the ypz primary for the SS440 i have some good trail set ups .............i run the EX/srx primaries on my gpx's with very good results just my experiences

X2, In my experience the YPZ's were under rated and the Comet 122/108's are over rated.
 
The YPZ is the worst clutch any manufacturer has ever put on a snowmobile. They need constant maintenance and never seem to work the same way twice.Any YPZ I have replaced with a Comet has had a lot better performance.
 
Wow Then I Must Have A Bunch Of Great One That Just Happen To Work Perfect ..............any Clutch Will Give You Problems Without Normal Maintenance ..........or It Is People Just Don't Know How To Tune Them In Do To Yamahas Limited Weight Offerings They Have Plenty Of Springs To Choose From That Is For Sure I Run Them On My Phazer Race Sleds And The Ss 440 Race Sleds And They Are Consistant As Can Be Just As Good As Any Comet Or Better

Could not of said it better. Comet has always been associated with racing in the minds of snowmobiliers. I consider the Comets to be verstile with alot of options but, in my experience a 800-1000 mile clutch and they need a total rebuild.
 
All I know is any YPZ clutch I have seen WILL not last and is very inconsistent . Back in 83-84 Yamaha had the Comet on the SRV and then in 85 they had the YPZ, the 85's would not run with the 83's or 84's and after the YPZ's craped out people used the Comet and were very happy that they were back on par with the 83's & 84's, If anyone has had good luck with the YPZ then that is great I am glad ,but my experience and the Yamaha people in my area think they are nothing but junk.. My 83 Vmax had over 2500 miles on it before I had to do anything to the original Comet. If you keep the Comet clean it will last a very long time, as good as any clutch out there.

if you keep any clutch clean it will last for a very long time if set up right i finally had to rebuild my ypz on my 88 ex 570 at 8000 miles or so and that was because it was taken care of many comets i have serviced have had as little as 500 miles on them and where junk ................no matter the primary you have it is all about maintenance i have over 11000 miles of my clutches on my 700 and they are like new yet i have owned the sled since new but i do clean the clutched more often than most and the race sleds get a going through after every weekend of racing dirt and belt dust is a clutch's worst enemy that is all i will say on the subject
all clutches will be junk very quick if not taken care of no matter the brand if you think ypz's are junk then you will not like the oringinal SRX primaries for the older sleds .............they require alot more maintenace than a ypz but you will never see a comet on my vintage sleds either unless it is a mod and i can run any primary then i go to a P-85
 
My ypz clutch lasted 7500 miles before it needed bushings. I've been through a lot of rollers though but its basic maintenance. I also keep the clutches clean.
 
Everyone is untitled to there opinion and that is fine, all I know is I will keep my Comets in place of the YPZ's. Yes I agree about the Polaris clutch it is a very good clutch & the newer Yamaha clutches are very good as well. I have a 102 on my 81 SRX and I also have a YP clutch for it as well in case I put it in some shows and yes the YP does need a lot of care.. Like I said if some people want to use them that is great, I am all for it, I am just saying what I have seen and I have never seen a YPZ last a full season with out a total rebuild no matter what.
