Hi there
I have a 96 vmax xt 600,I just recently rebuilt my clutches and went with the clutch set up that is on the top in the tech page's.
Turn's out the sled already had this setup installed by the previous owner. My question is this I've alway's ran the 89l belt, in the tech page's setup it say's to run the 8dn,will I loose any performance using the 89l?
I understand the 8dn is a harder coumpound belt is the only benifit of running one durability,is it the same overall size as the 89l?
Thank's!

I don't know where you read that it takes an 8dn belt but if you run an 8dn as compared to a 89-L you have to put more weight in the flyweights, as it may over rev with the harder compound belt!
In the tech pages clutching chart's that's what he said he used (setup on the top of the list).I do have more weight than stock and am running thinner head gasket.
Think i'll just run it and make sure i'm hitting 7800-7900 rpm's. I'm assuming the 8dn can take more abuse?

If the clutch is stock, go w/ the OE soft belt. They still will last PLEEEENTY long, the clutch won't slip and the sled won't faulter/studder from a stand still.
if it does not last with the 89l, you could always put on and aftermarket equivelent to a 8dn. it is not as hard as the 8dn and it did fix the problem my brother was having with his sx500r when we 136" it. was blowing a belt to shreds every 3-4hrs and you could not touch the belt.
I rebuilt the clutches with the same setup as before and the 89l seemed to hold up pretty well. You guy's answered my question that the 8dn is more durable but need more weight to run it,so if there's no performence gain's and the 89l hold's up I will stick with it.
Thank's alot!
