HELP, newbie here::: How do I remove the skid from my 98 Vmax sx700--- 136 track???

Bought a 98 vmax sx700 the other day, and I'm going over it..... found a crack on the suspension up front... so I wanna pull the skid out and have it welded, plus it will make putting the new slides on, a lot easier. It has the 136 extension kit on it. My buddy has a polaris and isn't familiar with the Yamaha, and I'm just a newbie so I have no clue..... Does anyone know of a how-to video or can someone guide me on pulling the skid and putting it back in???? THANKS GUYS, any and all HELP is appreciated.

Pull the six bolts holding it in, the two in the front are in front of the foot rest, you will have to pull the rubber plugs to get at them with a socket and long extension. Make sure you support the sled on a stand or hang it from the ceiling and loosen the rear drive wheel shaft and back off the tension adjustment bolts thru the windows in the track. Then just wrestle it out.
 
Thanks guys, I will try this tomorrow.... a bit nervous.... I don't even know what the REAR DRIVE WHEEL SHAFT is....., or where the TENSION ADJUSTMENT BOLTS are..... Does it change at all with the 136 extension kit on it???
 
you better search and get familiar with the parts of the sled.Do a lot of reading ahead of time.First time is always the hardest.My first time was not a pleasant time..but after a few more times it does get a little easier.
 
I have tried.... We've been trying to research the 1998 V-max sx700 and oddly enough, the web has VERY LITTLE information on them!
 
the skids should basically be the same as newer sleds.I know my stepsons 98 xtc skid is identical to my SXR and SRX skids with the exception of the shocks.There is info in the Tech section on removal and betheviper also has great write ups on skids also..and good tips also.
 
frustrating.... tried loosening the tension bolts thru the holes in the track.... but they don's seem to line up very well.... so that hasn't happened.... I removed ONE front bolt, than tried the other side.... it just fricken spins..... GRRRR.... so I said screw it, and went to put the other bolt up front back in.... but now the dammed thing doesn't line up with the fricken hole...... wtf :o|
 
are you removing the right nuts..You mentioned putting one up front..this is the rear of the track you should be at...better take a pic and show us where you are at and if you are backing the nuts off..they should just loosen up,no need to remove them
 
now I figured out that you gave up on the rear nuts and started to loosen the skid bolts up front.Yes usually 1 bolt comes loose and other will spin with the shaft.There was a thread/posts on this just last week or so how to handle that.But don't remove skid bolts untill you back off track tension first.Loosen axle nut and the loosen rear adjuster nuts,track will hang at this point.
Then start removing skid bolts.Usually some heat will help loosen rusty bolts and a good air impact gun is a must here..search for threads on the removal issues others have had exactly the same as you..simple fix.
 
One more question..... I haven't pulled the skid yet, but want to order new hyfax.... what length do I need for the mine? 121 with the 136 extension kit on it...??? Thanks
 
Never mind, I got the skid out.... the fricken "W" was cracked through on BOTH sides at the bottom weld.... At least it has new shocks/bearings/etc... :) Now I removed the screw from the front of the hyfax..... put a screwdriver in at an angle and hammered backward.... they won't budge!?
 
hit a little harder.Sometimes put screwdriver against the side of sliders and hit on an angle.Once they protrude thru the track windows,use visegrips on the ends and pull or tap on the vice grip.They can be hard to remove sometimes.Or shave the lip on top that goes over rail with a utility knife and then peel slide downward and off.Use spray silicone on the rails and spray inside of slides prior to putting new ones back on..helps to slide them on better.Locktite the retaining screws also ..
 
Thanks! Well, the whole skid is out so no windows to work with ;) But I will try all of that! Have to have some welds done, the W was cracked on BOTH sides at the old weld.... all the way through. I bought the sled a few weeks ago, and haven't ridden it yet but glad I pulled the skid and found the damage before it was to late out in the middle of nowhere.....
 
so that you won't feel so bad..when I bought my SRX in 05..after getting it home and inspecting..my w-arm was toast..wander why it didn't explode into pieces...bought new one for $250.Then when changing slidesthe next summer.the actual rails were worn thru badly.Guy stuck on these so I couldn't see the damage..other things were done bad also..no bushings in places,sloppy shocks. I then purchased another skid of a SXR from another local member on here.Sure it pisses you off how other people sell you stuff..but I wasn't at that time really aware what to look for..so had to put out extra on top of the actual purchase.But now all ids fine.Makes me wander how some guys will let their sleds go to pieces and not maintain stuff.At least my motor was in good shape..
 
Yeah, the W was cracked thru on both sides.... Took the guy 5 minutes literally to weld it all, and stiffen it up so that was good.... and only 20.00 :) Shocks on mine are new. Bushings are all good. The two straps up front though, are not stock???? They are both made out of that strap material used on construction sites (cranes etc use to lift stuff). I don't know if they were fabricated or made that way? Not looking forward to putting that skid back into the track. The one guide on here said that when reinstalling the skid, to remove two bolts to take the preload off of the rear shock????? I have no idea what that means? :) and is that a MUST?
