starting sleds after sitting

I know this has been a big debate on here why SRX\s take so many pulls to start.I have both sleds..SXR600 and SRX and they have been sitting in the garage for nearly a 3 weeks to a month without being started.So today decided to start them up,get engines hot and pull the oil cables full tilt to sort off get the bearings full of oil since they will be standing for a while yet before any snow shows up.
Like usual the 600 starts before the 1st pull is done and the SRX took like 30 pulls until it was running.Still makes me wander why such a difference between the two.Once running the SRX idles nicely and motor is snappy when hitting throttle.Just the nature of the beast I suppose.
Love that the 600 starts so easy anyways.
 
Is your choke adjusted properly? You can also pull all three choke plugers out and take a cm off of each of them with a dremel which will allow it to pull more fuel during chocking. I had to do that on my 1997 SX.
 
everything is adjusted properly..same as the 600..still what a difference in pulls.Once I get the srx running in snow weekly and in between..it usually starts in 4 pulls after.
 
i know my sxr500 tacks about 5 to 10 pulls on a cold day after the last weekend! then again i am a kid so i don't have the best arms for the job!
starts in one or two pulls on the trails :)
 
some say it might be the fuel pumps and have switched to a pump from a sx model.I have a brand new updated fuel pump as a spare,but not going to change it until one dies first.Just the nature of the beast..
 
I have found similar issues with my sx, when its warmer weather its about 1/2 a pull, and after I get out and ride it starts with ease for a week or 2 after, but cold and sitting with no riding it takes some pullin'.

I have just began to use cold start spray to get that intial start out the way.
 
My buddy has a 01 srx and we switched the fuel pump to a sxr and it helped out alot went from 30 pulls to 5 or 6...i think the diaframs are a little more stiff in the srx
 
still don't get it.The carbs would still have fuel in them after you shut off the engine..so it should really start up right away when choke is on..
 
Never owned a tripple but every other Yammie I've ever owned/worked on would start on no more than 3 if everything was up to snuff.

???? Don't sound right to me.

Well by the time u get that beast started u could have that pump half way on lol..what do u got to lose u still have a good pump .but I see your point with it should have fuel in the carbs but like I said earlier we changed my buddys and it was a big difference
 
ii is basically takes that many pulls because it has been sitting a while.The choke linkage is properly adjusted.With choke full open..the plungers will not open anymore.Once I get into regular running it will start better.Last year it was around the 4 pull mark as the sled was used more.Don't really want to change the pump now and have to go thru bleeding lines and such.That would be an off season job instead...

I am just amazed how fast the 600 starts up,,stunning..
 
my idle speed was off today..running at 3000..so turned idle screw down until 1800.Checked TPS and had to re-calibrate it from .89 to .86.That may help a little also.

JUST SOMETHING I DO, I START MY SLEDS AT LEAST ONCE FROM JANUARY TO DECEMBER. YOU DO THAT AND YOUR LOOKING AT 4 PULLS TOPS. NOW OF COARSE CAN,T REALLY COUNT WINTER SEASON. THIS HAS WORKED GREAT FOR ME. 3:16 (yammie tony)
 
Have you ever thought about installing a fuel primer system? They work great for hard starting machines and unit. Easy to install too. Al
 
I just put about a thimblefull of gas in the spark plug holes that first time of the season. After that it starts pretty good. Still really hard to pull on a really cold morning though. I think that over time the gas in the float bowls evaporates and then it takes time to work gas through the fuel pump and into the carbs. That why I cheat with gas in plug holes the engine can run for 10 seconds and spin hundreds of times more than I an pull it over with my arm.
 
how does gas evaporate in the bowls in a closed system.Why doesn't it do it in my 600 then???When I take carbs out for cleaning,there is always gas in the bowls to.But I am confident the SRX will start 4 pulls and under after I run it on snow again instead of sitting ..
 
That's just my theory Blue. I could be wrong, I am sometimes. The carbs are vented though and not completely closed to the atmosphere, and you're right there usually is some gas in the carbs when we tear them down, but how much? I just know that once it's been started for the season it's all good. :)
