pulled out a white fitting/tube from gas filler neck-what is this?

i was adding gas last night on my sx700r and my gas can got caught in filler neck on the gas tank and as i pulled it out it pulled out a whitish color fitting that i was able to push back into the tank... it only goes alittle bit into the filler neck... its almost the same circumfrence as the neck...was is this fitting? and did i hurt anything when i pulled it out? thanks
 
No, you didn't hurt anything. It is there to keep from over filling the tank, gas needs a place to expand. All vehicle gas tanks have something like this to prevent over filling. You take it out to replace the fuel filter.

but how the heck does this piece prevent you from overfilling the tank? it just 4-6 inch long tube...about the size of a cup or glass... and isnt the fuel filter inside the engine compatment? im really not sure too much about all this stuff
 
The baffle that you see can help you keep from overfilling or also prevent the fuel from sloshing and coming back out the filler hole. plus if you fill the tank and dont force any extra fuel past the baffle it works as stated above as an expansion area.
 
Once the fuel starts going above that white piece air is trapped inside of the tank. There's no way to displace all of the air so it leaves you a place for expansion. The fuel filter is inside the tank on the end of a hose, get a flashlight and look in to the left side and you will see it.
 
I don't know the correct nomenclature for it, but it keeps most of the fuel from sloshing up to the filler cap while out riding. Keeps ya from feeling that burning sensation around the webos about an hour after you fill up at the gas station.

Its best to keep it in there but if it is missing just make sure you don't completely fill the tank. The gas needs space to expand. It actually does a very good job in preventing you from competely filling the tank.

Sounds good. My daughters viper has it missing so i will keep that in mind. Anyone have a extra one laying around? Dont see it on the part diagrams.

Nope it helps with fuel slosh and overfilling. Looks/Sounds like a trip to the salvage yard.... or craigs list.
 
Been running for years without that baffle piece. Never ever a problem. Used to pull it out to get the max gas in it on long hauls between fill ups. Now it just sits on the shelf.
