Best gas to run?

Here is a question i dont think has been asked...

Would it be better to run 87 that has NO ethanol or 89 or 93 that contains ethanol in a stock 01 srx?

how about in sleds in general?
 

true but according to my book the srx compression ratio is 6.5:1.... that doesnt really seem high enough to need anything but 87 octane...

im kinda new to the srx scene but whats the ratio of burndowns due to ethanol as opposed to low octane gas?

i know i had problems 2 years ago when i went from running 87 in my 84 vmax540 to 93octane... it wouldnt even rev out, i changed the cdi, the coil, check every connection, messed around messed around... then finally drained the 93 and refilled with 87, it went instantly back to normal

i ran 87 with ethanol in my vmax4 for around 1500 miles and never saw a problem... its 6.3:1 compression
 
throw the stale 93 in your snowblower and go to the pump and get some fresh 91+ for your srx. why mess with something like that, makes no sense. my 01 srx motor is in 1000 pieces now due to a burndown 2 weeks ago, over $2000 for me to fix it. you wanna be in my situation? i think not! now go get some good gas!
 
sorry i guess i didnt explain part of my reasoning...

the gas from the pump has been in the ground for god knows how long, because very few people buy it... it comes from the gas pump old and stale (in theory)

what blew your motor up matty?

im going to ask my local gas station how often they get shipments of 93 octane as opposed to 87

Compression ratio is only part of the package that dictates how much octane is required in an application. Pipe design and ignition timing are equally as important in determining how much heat is carried in the motor, or in the exhaust.
 
ok i got ya. i thought you meant you had some stale gas sitting around your garage or somethin. I would still go with the 93 thats been in the ground for a while, stored in large quantities it wont go stale as if it were sitting in your slef for a few months.

I think a combination of things, as I havent found a 100% culprit yet. my crank bearings were all bad except for 2, one of my crank seals was bad, 2 bad exhaust donuts, weak exhaust springs. definatly an air leakage problem. im sure my crank is out of phase...etc. gonna seal her all up very air tight when i decide to sink the money in to get her back on the trails.
 
91 + octane booster

Most of the gas stations i stop at don't have 93, more or less they have 91....i put that in with a little bit of octane booster that i carry along. never know what your getting from the pump these days, better to be safe than sorry.
 
awe yes octane booster... im flirting with an argument enough as it is, lets not bring that stuff into the conversation!! :)

10 gallon of premium 93-94 octane fuel-$4.20, $42.00 fill up/throw in half bottle of 104 booster for good measure, a bottle is $8 you get 2 tanks from 1 bottle, so thats $50 total at fill up..................hmmmm, which one will be cheaper................. :o| :o|
 
i am guessing that the uncoreccted compression ratio has something to do with as well?
 
its not the money im concerned about... when you spend a few hundred dollars a season on gas a few bucks doesnt make a difference... if i was that worried about dimes i would save the gas out of my float bowls when i clean all 5 carbs at the begining of the season... im worried about getting crappy 93 octane gas with ethanol in it... but i guess no one has ever had that problem or blown up a sled because they were jetted for the water ATTRACTING ethanol
 
If you already know the answer then why ask the question? The fuel /ethanol issues has been beaten to death on these forums, use the search feature, youll find enough reading to last till next x-mas.
 
Just my 2cents. I just fill up my truck first then the sleds on the way up north. Filling the truck first will pull enough gallons through to make sure your getting good gas in the sleds. On the trail we ususally only have one choice anyway and a million guys are in line, so good gas. If not let your buddies fill first then you go last! I always run highest octain they have. Besides im pretty sure the gas they deliver wasnt just made either. It doesnt have a born on date like beer!
 
Save even more money and run E-85! With todays unknown qaulity of fuel (no matter what octane) we are all rolling the dice riding these days!
