700 Red head vs Blue head motor opinions

Comparing the MM700 (Red Head w/ pipes) to a SRX700 (Blue Head w/ stock triple pipes) motors. I am not looking at the Viper motor at this time.
I am looking for opinions on stock for stock which one would you use as a dependable mountain motor.

Is there really much power difference?

I have a built MMax chassis to put it in. I am aware that a bulkhead swap would be require. Not a problem.

I have been running MM700's since '97, I have only 15 miles of seat time on a SRX700 mountain.

My 2 cents. The 700 redhead is good for about 115ish horse from the factory. Pipes, porting, etc.. and it will go 145ish. It's a touch lighter, and you don't have to mess with powervalve maintenance.

The 700 srx motor is about 140ish horse from the factory. Ported will make 150 - 155ish. 780 big bore is good for about 165ish on the stock pipes/carbs. Has powervalves, but you have to maintain them.

All of them are about the same for reliability, but the 780 is a little temperamental regarding fuel and warm up. I really like my piped/ported red head out west. I loved my 780 srx based sled. If I was going to do it again and didn't care which way I went I think I'd build a 780 srx based motor and stuff it into the mountain max chassis since you are already thinking of doing an srx motor anyway. I wouldn't bother with the red head unless you are planning to pipe/port it.
 
Out of the box bone stock the srx power valve motors have 30ish more horses. Red heads can be masaged to match or at least be real close. IMO the more you masage you give up on reliabiltiy. In stock form red head is less maintance, no powervalves to clean or adjust. Redhead parts seem easier to find, Both cranks are pricey! Depends on how much power you want/need, How much you want to spend "tinkering".
 
It really depends what kind of rideing.I had srx mountain had good power but very front end heavy put on apex mountain skis helped some sold the machine. I have 2001 mountain max one is piped sounds great and pulls just as hard as the srx but much better handling.The other is stock works good but less power. We ride in mountains 2or 3 feet powder 7000 feet above sea level.We liked that srx on the lake.I also have apex mountain skis on both mountain maxs
 
700 RED HEAD IS NOT ONLY THE BEST TRIPLE YAMAHA MADE , BUT MIGHT BE THE BEST MOTOR THEY EVER PUT IN A SNOWMOBILE. 3:16 (yammie tony)
 
i personally would go for the redhead the way theyre shapped maintains compression al the way through temp changes and they have more torque with larger pistons im makeing a mountain out of my sx redhead and its never been toched with 4500 miles and its faster then my 04 viper and blows all my buddys off the trail and in the powder ive never run short on power
 
I love those redhead motors. So does Olav Aaen. He claimed it was THE best motor he ever ran in his test go kart he used for testing clutch products. He ran it with his triple pipes and said he could not kill it.
