Need Some advice

Just got back from my first trip up north to the U.P. It was awesome except for the back breaking suspension on my 95 vmax. What are some options for upgrading the rear skid. Should I go with a new yamaha skid or try to find an X-10 skid? Also what kind of mileage should I be getting It seemed to get about 50 mile to the tank maybe 60 im not to sure. Any advice would be great. Thanks Guys
 
New sled? Just saying.

You could pick up a newer vmax or sx with a read head in it for a little over a $1000 and get a better suspension and better mileage to boot.

I have been seeing a lot of them in Craigslist locally.

I have an ad biovin expert x on my 2001 Srx 700 best ride ull get on a Srx And they transfer weight awsome pulls skis hard for 75 to 100 yards there is a guy on this site parting out Srx 700 he has 1 for sale 700$ bolt rite in

Might want to check your carbs, my '96 600 did 47 miles on about 5 gallons. From what I've read 8-10mpg is expected. Is it possible the carbs were jetted in that thing?

We were just up at Twin Lakes over the Holidays. Milage can vary tremendously. If we ran the packed groomed trail, we could easily get 100 miles on a fill up. Generally 7.5 to 8 gallons. But as soon as we took of onto back roads, logging roads two tracks. that distance fell really fast. 50 miles and we better be getting gas. One thing I found, that in the Kewanaw there are not many gas station's near the trail. In fact we only use one. Krupps convienance store. One of our trips, we ran from Twin Lakes North to Copper City and back to Twin Lakes, on a singe tank of fuel. The 700 SXR used 7.9, Viper 8.3 and 600 DLX use 9.6. Now that was close to running out. lol. Al
 
Not to sure if my carbs are jetted I did clean them before the season. I just pick this sled up over the summer it is my first sled.

Where should I look on Craigslist?
 
Look under: recreational vehicles
If you want to find only Yamaha, type that in the search box. If you're looking for a specific model, type that in.
 
google up searchtempest. it lets you search a bunch of craiglist sites at once. You can tell it how far away and how much you want to pay among other things.

I understand about first sleds. Ride it and enjoy it as you learn more about the sport and what you want in your next sled. . As all the guys here will tell you learn to maintain it and you will get the most out of whatever you ride. Check clutches, belts, wheels bearing and any lubrication spots, this will all help mileage and give you peace of mind. An owners manual is very handy for this. Hope you have a good year riding.
 
I type yamaha in search box. will pull up pianos and all sorts of stuff. Searches all catagorys as depends on where poster put it. As far as the vmax goes I had problems with the clutches last season I had a 95 vmax le. the primary was sluggish to engage. Like you were letting the clutch pedal out realllly slow. Popped it off cleaned it all off/out, lubed it and worked ALOT better. You should be able to pick up a skid out of a 96 vmax xt (extra travel) pretty cheap and they are direct bolt ins. Newer sled would be lighter,faster, with a better ride. all about how much $ for comfort. All the older vmaxs I had rode like a brick

ndviper (another member) has an add up a page or so back. Parting out 96 vmax xt. Thats the skid I was talking about.

I sent ndviper a message. Thanks for the help. So that skid will bolt right into my sled without relocating mounting holes correct?
 
Step kid crashed his 96 xt, Donated th 95 vmaxe le to him and by the time he was done it was an xt in le clothing. Was a few years ago. Pretty sure everything bolted directly in. The xt has 8-10 inches more travel. Will hike the rear up alil and get rid of the lower rider efect the 94-95 vmaxs were known for.
 
If your thinking about upgrading track or studding the one you got now would be the time!With the way the sides come off them you could have that drive shaft out in no time. Prolly not a bad idea to pull the cover of the chain case and clean it out too!

My track is pretty new and I did clean out the chaincase over the summer. Went through the sled as much as I could. I did a 150 trouble free miles last weekend.
