when I owned my 81 SRX back in the day ,there was a recall by Yamaha that had to do with the Crankshaft, had to do with cranks flexing to much.Maybe check on that...this was in Canada, don't know about the US..but it is all the same cranks made by Yamaha...

upload your pics to Photobucket.com and then copy and paste on here..works great..
Yes....Sled was recalled by Yamaha....Yamaha reps would offer the customers a new 1982 SRV 540 if they would return sled. Yamaha then would remove clutch ( Which was blowing up at 9500 rpm's, replace with a Comet 102-c ) Would install an additional engine mount and replace crank and top end on most. I think there may only be several sleds in the USA that did not get touched and still has the original motor in it...This thing rips !!!!
I will try to get pics posted soon...

SOUNDS LIKE YOU FOUND A GEM, BUT YOUR STORIES ON THE YAMAHA RECALL FOR THESE SLEDS IS CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR. THERE WERE 21 SERVICE BULLETINS FOR THE 81 SRX, 21 UPDATES AND OR RECALLS INCLUDING many ENGINE, CRANK CASE , STATOR, CDI, CLUTCH, SECONDARY, CARB, JETTING etc VERY RARE TO FIND ONE THAT DOSE HAVE NUMBERS MATCH BECAUSE MANY WERE UPDATED WITH CASE THAT WAS UNSTAMPED. THE 81 SRX DID NOT PEAK AT 9500, YAMAHA CLUTCHES WERE NOT DURABLE ENOUGH FOR THE EXTREME HIGH HP THIS SLED HAD, SO YAMAHA WITH COMET ADDED 102c. PEAK RPM ON THIS SLED WAS 9250, ALSO THAN THE UPDATED ENGINE MOUNT WAS ADDED. YAMAHA DECIDED TO PULL THE PLUG ON THE 81 SRX AND GAVE OWNERS A FEW OPTIONS THROUGH THEIR DEALERS. YOU CAN TRADE YOUR 81 SRX IN ON A 1982 SRV PLUS $2400 BUCKS, OR TAKE IT TO YOUR DEALER, HAVE THEM PULL MOTOR SO THEY COULD DESTROY IT AND THAN GIVE YA BACK YOUR SLED WITH NO MOTOR, OR KEEP YOUR 81 SRX. I SAW A YAMAHA REP AND MY DEALER DRIVE AIR IMPACT CHISELS IN 10 OF THESE MOTORS IN 1981. THAN JUST SCRAP THE REST. 3:16 (yammie tony)Chibravo said:Yes....Sled was recalled by Yamaha....Yamaha reps would offer the customers a new 1982 SRV 540 if they would return sled. after I had my 81 SRX taken in for the recall for the crank..gotr it back and blew a piston within 5 minutes.I was pissed off.Took it back again ..they were to do the repairs free..got it back..ran it again and Bang another piston blows. and decided to take it to a bigger dealership to ask some questions. The first dealership didn't do what was required,we checked the system thru Yamaha.but they still charged Yamaha. They were crooks.Don't know why I was blowing pistons. So the 2nd dealership did the repairs free.My cousin had the same sled but didn't have the updates done..his was good.So I should never have taken it in then.Anyways I was so pissed off.I took the sled back to the first dealership and my cousin's as well.Since no body would really buy these sleds used now we were screwed. The owner was away on holidays and we worked on the salesman to take the 2 SRX's for straight trade on 2 Tri-Motos.The guy went for it and we ran with the motos out of there.
Later heard from my cousin they sold my SRX to some guy who took it to the lake and gave it and BOOM!! she goes again..lol.He told me dealership was pissed off at me..but what did I do wrong.I laughed when I heard that..good for them .To bad this had to happen..loved that sled. But never heard the things you talked about Tony about destroying motors or trading up to another sled. Big conspiracy by Yamaha I think and that wasn't very nice now that I find the truth..we were not given any info like that..not nice Yamaha..not nice at all..wasted $4000 on that sled.I never went back to sleding again until 2005.They didn't make any money from me for over 20 years..but I got back on a Yami again...
Loved riding the tri-moto for a lot of years..winter and summer..

Bluemonster unfortunately, as with alot of updates/recalls if you do not ask..... Over time, I have learnt to do my homework and twisting the right ear/s helps ! As far as the cranks on 81's the general consense's is if it has lasted 30+ years it must be a good one ?

YEA MONSTER , THATS EXACTLY WHAT I SAW. AND I WAS AT MY DEALERS EVERY NIGHT. I ALSO HAVE A 21 PAGE BINDER RIGHT FROM YAMAHA JUST FOR THE 81 SRX WITH ALL UPDATES AND RECALLS. I ALSO HAVE POSTER IN MY GARAGE THAT I TOOK FROM MY DEALER THAT WAS CALLED'' SRX 440 E '' TRAIL UPDATE KIT. NOW FOR ME, I LOVED MY 81 SRX, IT STILL LIVES TODAY AND GUY THAT HAS IT TOTAL RESTORED IT AND SHOWS IT. ANOTHER THING I WILL ADD CRAZY THING HERE WAS I WAS TOLD 30 YEARS AGO THAT IF YOU BOUGHT ONE OF THESE NEW AND THEY DID NOT BLOW UP FIRST MONTH YOU HAD IT, SLED WOULD BE FINE. I NEVER BURNED MINE DOWN, ONLY THING I DID STUPID ONCE WAS COLD SEIZED IT. SLED FLEW, ESPECIALLY WHEN VERY COLD OUT SIDE. 3:16 (yammie tony)

I hope you enjoy your new SRX. These sleds are a ball to drive, stay on top of the jetting and you will be fine. These sleds aren't as bad a sled as people would lead you to believe, these sleds have taken a bad rap over the years, yes they had problems in the beginning but like someone said if they are still around after 30+ years then they must be OK. Take care of the maintenance and enjoy, chances are you will be just fine..
