ok I think I am on the right track but some guidance from those who know is worth its weight in gold.

First time riding this snowmobile. Cleaned the primary and replaced some rollers and bushings, all seems well with it. Took it out and it screams, to 60 ish. Rpms at this speed are mid 8k's and I dont want to keep letting it rev higher and blow this thing up. It just doesnt feel like it's shifting into high gear here, my 91 phazer II is faster.

Is it my secondary? I had it off earlier but have not taken it apart, don't know anything about secondary clutches. Read up a bit here on the forums, sounds like no special tools, just tear into it, clean it and check for wear? Thats my game plan, hopefully I find something noticable becuase this sled should really move faster than it is.

Belt - newer belt on it, 89L-17641-01, had this from another sled, could not find what exact belt is supposed to go on this snowmobile. It originally had a 89X-17641-01 on it but it was really tight and made the sled creep and it squealed a lot so I swapped it.

OH - Also removed the 3 washers from the back of the 3 8mm bolts to let the belt sit a touch lower in the clutch.

thanks all!

them motors are pretty quick. My stepson had a vmax600 years back and that twin would give my SXR600 a run for its money,it has good torque and pull that twin,,surprised me..

Secondary has buttons for the ramps to slide on......can fail, and check the bearing on the shaft behind it,check moter mounts as well.If the srings are origanal they could be hurting as well.

.

Thanks for the info - I have a secondary from 98 vmax 600sx that I am going to slap onto this sled and give it a test ride this week, pending snow :), if performance is better it will guide me to work on the original secondary. Bluewho - bearing is good on the shaft and motor mounts are good, srings?

Well the secondary clutches are not interchangable, looks like the splined shaft on the 98 is shorter, its clutch did not slide all the way onto my 95 so was unable to test it that way, got the clutch from the 95 in the garage, gonna tear it apart after I research on here how to do that

A 96 Vmax xt 600 secondary will work. There is info on this site as to what to use. I remember it required some parts froma 2000 phazer.

It must need some serious parts and reconfig becuse the secondary was at least 1" out of alignment with the primary. Either way, I'll take the secondary apart and check it out. I read the manual and it says to use a tool to compress the clutch, is there a way to do this without any "special" tools? I couldnt find anything but am still searching.

Belt

For the belt, 89L-17641-00 is the correct original belt for the 95 Vmax 500/600. Any chance your clutch cover has a sticker that notes the belt number?
I believe your 89L-17641-01 has superceded the original 89L-17641-00 which I don't think is available anymore, not sure what the differences are.
