I have a 2001 SXR 700 and I am considering Turks trail performance modifications. However, I've read a lot of post suggesting I stay away from the head gasket mod due to the poor fuel quality nowadays.

My question is, will I see any positive gains by making the clutching mods recommended by Turk if I don't do the head gasket mod?

I don't want to spend all the money if it's kind of an "all or nothing" modification.

Thanks in advance for any and all input!

I took his suggestions when I had my 2000 SXR
If I remember he told me to add weight, change primary spring and run a apex helix
It worked really weill

the thing with a red head engine its a lot of little things put together that make them fly.just the cluching set up will be the biggest differance

I just did turks trail set up on my 97 SX 700. It definitely woke the sled up a ton. I went only to one head gasket, and i have 200 miles on it so far. With todays fuel i bumped my jets up also. Clutching i did exactly what he recommended. You will think you are on a different sled.

Did you re-gear also? For the 2001 SXR Turk recommended going down a tooth on the bottom gear. Does this sound right? Also, is it necessary with the clutching mods to re-gear?

Thanks everyone for the input. Ton of great people here and lots of usefull information...

Can you tell without removing the heads of any layers are removed? I just bought an 01 sxr700 and can only see one but don't know if the other two arent visible with heads on

I did regear mine, but i would recommend leaving it stock gearing. Regearing it revs the motor a little to high for me, but i do a mixture of field and trail riding. If you do all trail riding, then i would regear it. Although i ran the clutch set up with my stock gear and there was still a noticeable difference.

And yammieguy, if there is a brass rivet in the head gasket, then it is untouched.

Great! Thanks SRXLance! I'm leaning towards the clutching mods and leaving the gearing and the head gasket mod alone for now. I'll hopefully notice an improvement with just the clutching mods, but if I need more then I'll always be able to do the head gasket or gearing down the road. I've already notched the reeds and drilled the stock silencer as mentioned in the tech section. Oh, and I still have stock jetting so maybe I'll go down one jet size at each carb. Not sure if I dare go to the 142.5's accross the board with todays fuel quality... Now I just need to find me a 51/43 Helix.

Thanks again!

I have updated both SXR's with Turks recommedations, including clutching, gears and head mod. The exception was, I milled the head .020 rather than removing one lay of gasket material. This is basically the same dimension as one layer of gasket. I feel the extra sealing of the gasket is still intact. Needless to say, I have run over 5,000 miles on the 2000 SXR without any problems. I am extreamly happy with the performance. Good luck with your decisions. Al

I would leave the stock jetting if you are just trail riding and not racing. The performance gain is not worth the risk of poor fuel.

I would recommend jetting up a jet size with the ethanol in todays fuel. If anything do not go down a size, its not worth the risk. If you also do the head gasket mod, remember its recommended to only run premium.

Yeah, thanks for the input. I'll probably leave the jetting alone at this point so I can run either regular or premium gas depending and which station I hit while on the trails. Also, I have a source for some ethanol free 87 octane locally which I try to run whenever possible. The head gasket mod would prevent me from being able to do that. I think at this point I'll just focus on the clutching mods only.

Thanks again!

i have middle layer of gasket removed sinve i purchased my sxr in 2002 without any issues. i have a few other mods and the sled has been extreemly reliable
