Yes, I know this has been discussed several times but I'm still a little lost. Do you take a long straight edge and go behind the primary, then behind the secondary? What do you actually measure? A write up would be awesome.

Clutch alignment tool works best, it already has the offset built in, and good ones come with the center to center tool as well. With these tools a write up is not needed as it either fits or does not.

How about for the poor people that don't have $50 to spend on a tool their going to use once?

Find someone local with a tool that could stop over or that you could borrow. I have the high dollar Sledpro tool, one easy step and it's done.

i cant remember the exact mesurements for the srx but i think its 15mm offset and 268.5 center to center. someone correct me if im wrong. offset you set a straight edge off of the back of the primary fixed sheave. and make sure its perfectly flat with the sheave. make sure the straight edge is long enough so it overlaps behind the back of the 2ndary clutch. now use a digital dial caliper and measure from the back of the 2ndary to the straight edge. thats how you obtian offset measurement. for center to center remove the 2ndary clutch keep the primary fixed. measure from the center of the driveshaft from the center of the inside of the primary where the belt rides in the inside. make sure you are straight and not crooked when taking this measurement. the trick is to get them both in spec without moving one measurement out while you are trying to achieve the other one. and ill tell you what it is a p.i.t.a. i did it without the tools so it can be done. it just takes lots of patience to get it right. took me 3 hours till i finally got it. a little tip it helps to keep the motor mounts a little on the draggy side so the motor isnt floppin all around on ya. and moving. keep trying till you finally get both measurments correct.

also you really havta have a good eye to do this without the tools. you gotta keep the motor parellel as well so there isnt any twist on the primary clutch. cause thatll screw up your offset measurement. its not an easy task. at the end of it all when you feel comfy with what you got. check your belt deflection there is a writeup in the tech section how to do this and also. take it for a peel and make sure your clutches arent getting nitro hot. if you cant touch them with your fingers without getting burned they are too hot which will cause excessive belt wear. and something isnt right.
another edit: a way to check for parallel when measuring offset is to make sur the straight edge drapes a few inches over the 2ndary clutch. take measurments at multiple points if they are all the same or very close you are good to go as far as your primary clutch being parellel to your secondary. its coming back to me as i think about it lol

WHEN YOU CHECKING OFFSET THE WAY YOU POSTED, YOU MEASURE THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE FIXED sheave ON YOUR PRIMARY AND THE INNER SHEAVE ON YOUR SECONDARY. CENTER TO CENTER IS MEASURED AT THE CENTER OF EACH BOLT. ITS SO SIMPLE I DO IT WITH A RULER AND A TAP MEASURE. REAL OLD SCHOOL. 3:16 (yammie tony)

when you put a straight edge on the back of the primary to the back of the secondary measure on both the front and back side of secondary.thats what i do to get the motor straight and offset correct.for c to c i just measure from center of bolt to bolt.a nail or something threw a stick works ok,may not be perfect but works for free

;)! when i did it, it was my first time so it took me a while lol. but i have a bad habit of second guessing myself too.

Thanks guys and especially YAMMIEGOD (Tony). I got the idea of how to do it now. I knew it could be done with a ruler and tape measure.

My secondary has in/out freeplay. Does it get pushed towards the carbs, or towards the cowl when measuring the offset?

Your side to side play in your secondary is less than a 1/4 inch right? I would roughly center it as that play is for self alignment. If you have more than 1/4 inch I think you mayhave another problem. I bought the flat steel off-set alingment tool. I think it was only like 20 bucks and use a tape measure for center to center.

The freeplay is probably less than 1/4 inch. Its adjustable with the shims on the bearing side and the outside. I don't see why not have a little more slack, that way it can make up for any misalignment. What bad happens if there's too much freeplay?

More than 1/4 I would suspect bearings on there way out or mis-installed. There shouldnt be much movement on shaft, secondary should move back and forth on shaft.

So, If I put a straight edge on the back of the primary, and pass it behind the secondary, where are the measurements of 15mm offset measured to? Back of the primary or inside the inner secondary sheave?

it is best you pu a clutch tool for that,I tried with a straight edge like you are, just couldn't be accurate. The tool is mint as it centers the clutch's and offset all at 1 time..so very easy to and quick.Once you have that tool you will wander how you did without it.
