First time riding piped viper today questions for you jetting and clutching experts

wheres your needle at now in the mag?

what clip posistion and where are shims placed at?

what main is in there now?

what temps are you in now for your testing?

what are your normal riding temps on average?

Right now I believe the clip position is at 3 with one shim on top and one on bottome.

I have a 165 Main in right now.

The temp out side was about 30 degrees.

In a normal year I would be riding in temps from -5 to 20 degrees F I would say.

ok, well then I would suggest you bump all of them up some, (obviously, the mag the most) because youd be good now to about 20 degrees on your center and pto but under that temp and youd be in trouble, so better off to be a little richer for the temp you ride in on average.

((One note:)) your needle settings right now if you have it in groove 3 with 1 shim on top and 1 on bottom is leaner then stock, so I would go with groove 4 with 1 shim on top and 1 on bottom, this will be 3.5 needle setting which is a half spot richer then the stock 3 which would be 3rd groove with both shims under the clip.

If it were me doing it, I would shim the center and pto needles a half shim, then go up to 167.5's for mains. the needles alone is going to make a big differance if they are where you say they are but the 2.5 jet size will add some safety for below 10 degree temps on wide open runs.

the mag needs more, like clip in 4 and both shims under clip, 167.5 main jet

If you can, make it back here with some plug pictures, like your last, as I would be curious to see the changes on your sled.

Yes I sure will. Carbs are already set just gotta put them in and change some clutching things and will get some pictures up of the slugs tomorow or the next day.

THey were at notch 3 with both shims under I guess. So I set the pto and center at the 4th notch with 1 under and 1 over. I set the mag at 4 with both shims under. ANd put 167.5 mains in across the board.

I got my sled out again today and it ran really good in the morning but as the temp rose during the day I started to get a pretty bad bog in the mid range but after I came through the mid range it was very fast and no bog. I did not get a chance to take pictures of the plugs but in the morning all three circuits were dark brown on the porcelain in the plug and the ground strap was black at the base and dark brown on the tip and the electrode is black. Then closer to the end of the day I took another test of the mid range and the plugs were black all around very boggy egt temps at midrange at this time were in the 960's and dropping while I rode. I put on 70 miles today with no issues other than that bog.

Temps today in the morning 15 to 20 degrees. Temps tonight were from 25 to 35. I am thinking I should drop the needles across the board. What are your thoughts?

Now I am running
Mains 167.5
Needles 4th notch both washers under on mag side. Pto and center 4th notch 1 under and one over.
Pilots 55
Fs 2 turns out

again..., set it up for the temps you ride in on average, if you lean the needles down because your riding in 30 and up, ya its gonna be rich. When its 20 and under like you say you ride in will be right on the money, you cant have it all with 1 setting for jetting/tempwise, you have to set it up for the temps you ride in 90% and just deal with the 10% unless you like fiddling with the carbs all the time, sorry, but thats as easy I can put it.
