I'm installing a 51/43 helix in my 2001 SX700R per Turks trail performance recommendations and there is no mention of what spring wrap I should use. Should I use the same setting that my stock helix uses or do I need to change it to something else?
If I need to change the setting, can someone try and explain why? I'm a little in the dark when it comes to secondary clutches...
Thanks everyone!

wrap it to 90 degrees and you will get the best shift characteristics for that clutch package. You need to increase the wrap and preload in the secondary spring so that it backshifts properly due to the change in the helix angle.
I have the same setup and wasn't happy until I got wrapped to 90 degrees.

I'll give it a shot. Thank you!

WRAP HAS ALOT TO DO WITH WHAT SPRING YOUR USEING. BEING THIS IS A SXR I BET ITS GREEN. 70 DEGREE SHOULD WORK. 3:16 (yammie tony)

It's the stock spring, which is Y-G-Y for what it's worth. So you say 70, and another post recommends 90. Is there a huge difference between the two? Maybe I compromise and try 80???
Maybe I can test each setting and find what suits my needs. I just don't know if I can hurt anything by trying the different settings.
Thanks!

try 80 wrap with red spring or 70 wrap with green spring.Going 90 wrap is a lot and I am sure it won't backshift good.
SR -- I have the red spring and probably a few other mods to my sled that you may not have so 90 for me is good but many not be for you. Like the other said, start at 70 and work you way up to see how the sled reacts and then choose the setting that you prefer for your riding style. It never hurts to try things outside your comfort zone because you often learn a lot more.

90 degree wrap will make it backshift better, not the other way.
sr522re, look on your secondary spring, it will be black and have a colored dot, the dot is either red or green. The red is a softer spring then the green is, so thats why you have people offering advice on differnt settings, they are referring to differnt springs. You dont need as much tension with the green vs the red because its a stronger rate spring. See which one you have in there.
The secondary twist must be tuned in for YOUR sled, your weight, your riding style, so somone can give you a base setting to try but it comes down to personal preferance as to where you fine tune it to. The tighter the setting the better the backshift but with greater loss of topend speed. The looser the tension the less backshift but greater topend speeds, so set it up to the riding you do 90% of the time.

Thank you Mills! I agree, I'll start at 70 and work my way up until I find the degree that I prefer. Now if only I had some snow around my house. What a crazy winter we're having over in in Mich...

Sorry, I misspoke earlier. Yes, my secondary spring is "Green" for what it's worth... :-)

MrViper, thank you very much for the simple explaination of what the "wrap" controls. I did not know that, and haven't seen that information anywhere on this site till now. Now that I understand what to expect from the different settings it will be far easier to test and tune myself. And for what it's worth as I corrected myself earlier, I am running the green spring. Once I get this new helix installed I'll start off at 70 degrees and go from there. I've got all the other primary clutch componants Turk recommended on order so hopefully in the next week or two I'll be ready to hit the trails. That is if we get any snow anyways...
Well thanks again for all the help!
