I recently got back into sledding and purchased a clean low mileage stock 98 700 XTC, clutch is engaging just under 4k and on the lake it pulls really strong all the way up to 140kph where it creeps up to 145kph slowly and stops. I thought the 700's were good for a few more kph then this, is this just gearing and or clutch? if i piped and regeared it abit for lake runs would it still be ok for trail ridding? I mainly run lakes but do do abit of trail cruising with family.

Engagement sounds right, what are your max rpm's? Should be 8500, also depends on what kind of surface you were running on because any loose snow will kill top speed.

put some triple pipes on it and it will pick up more speed.We have triple pipes on the XTC here..spounds great and much more perky on the throttle

Musselman; did you get your SRX up to speed?
i would stay away from pipes as in ontario they are handing tickets out for modified exhaust. i would do the silencer mod in the tec pages with a good clutch set-up and the reed notch. should make it pretty snappy.

I've got a set of power Inc end dumps w jetting and clutching I would sell you..
it has stock gearing and a studded 1.25 track, i was running on semi hard packed snow and when i followed my own tracks back down the lake it really wasn't picking up any top speed. I don't remember the rpm it was running when wide open it was fairly high though, i think above 8k.
supposed to be running at 8500 at wot. still have stock steel skis on it?
yes everything is stock as far as i know. do plastic skis help that much? i would like to get it sorted out before i started modding it, 145kph is a far cry from 165kph.
well i would check the ski alignment, chain case oil for debris, go through all the bearings in the skid to make shure you do not have a bad one and check the slider plastic to see if it may be worn through or if track clips are missing.
the plastic skis slide better on the snow and weigh less than the stock ones. they also steer better. you can put a used set from any yamaha sled on it.
lighter = faster but all the other things i mentioned go a long way towards your top speed if they are causing problems as extra friction also robs speed.

Still breaking in the new motor but had it up to 140 km/h in some loose snow on the trail. Definitely feels stronger than last year.norwegian said:Musselman; did you get your SRX up to speed?

mine engages at 4500 and i get up to 140 (I never like to pin an engine with 19000kms) but if i did it still got some get up and go
i guess it was just the track and the snow conditions on the lake as I've now seen over 185kph multiple times last Saturday with clean ice and little snow.

on the XTC 700 here with triple pipes we are only getting about 160km/h,but it has a 1.5 track in it.
i am still having problems hooking up in loose snow, raced a 800ho a few times for short distances in looser snow and he was spanking me but for some reason he refused to stay with me across the lake.
I am not sure how accurate the spedo is i would of coarse have to get radared to know how quick the sled really is.
