idle hang resolved?

not positive yet but these engines seem to idle back down better with idle at 1400-1500 r.p.m. with engine fully warm. read on some other forum about this. have not ridden enuf to be sure. sprayed starting fluid around end of crankcase on clutch side. seems o.k. hard to be 100% without pressure checking. idles quite steady down low. slightly less smooth than at 1600 and higher. still acceptable. i would suggest trying this if u r having hang problems. just 2 see if it helps. it makes sense that these 2 smoking triple rippers will come down better the smaller the opening in the throttle bores are when the throttle is released. as a test(have not tried yet) u could set warm idle at 1200- lets say run it, then at 2000 run it ,see what the difference is on how it comes down. my brothers viper seems 2 have benifitted from a lower warm idle level also. maybe our crankcases are not 100% and this has some effect. will replace seals in both if problems persist or as preventative main. in off-season. i am glad 2 have new t.p.s. could not calibarate old one. not enuf range. happy ripping- conditions permitting
 

My piped viper has a hanging idle when I don't have the idle set at 1500 or lower. So I think the start up idle setting has a lot to do with it.
 
My piped viper had the same problem, had to set the idle down to 1500rpm and also turned the fuel screws 2 turns out. That fixed the problem.

When mine was stock it never did hang, I could run it at 1800rpm and it was fine. When i piped it, then it started to hang.
 
Lots of posts on this condition a few years back. Even a writeup in one of the snowmobile rags. It seems the Viper motor once broke in idles high just because it can. Maybe the pork-chop crank weights play into this. Flip the "starter/choke" lever for a second and see if the idle comes down. Some choose to richen the idle mixture to combat this. It really isn't a problem in my opinion.

To me it was when my sled was sitting at 4000rpm and would not come down. But thinking about it, that would be set up great of drag racing. Lol
 
My Yamaha technician told me to do the same thing. I set it at 1,200 RPM when started. After running it for awhile on the trails, I would come to a stop and sure enough, no idle hang and idles at 1,700 RPM. It definitely worked for me.

Did you do that on your SRX?
 
hey jason. we will set your idle down when heads are back on should help the hang. see if it is still losing antifreeze. hey check out 2002 srx in craigslist
(w. maine) good deal for backup sled?

Nice will give that a shot! After searching through the forums I figured the fuel/air screw needed to be turned out from the factory setting (1 1/8 turns I think?). But yeah there is a definitely a difference between how high a sled will idle when it's just started and once it's been driven and warmed up.
 
After a recent carb clean and fuel acre adjust I'm having the same problem set my idle to 1800 it was low before the clean so maybe I'll turn it back down some

I have mine at 1 1/2. Start it up warm and adjust idle to 1,000 - 1,200. Drive it around and then note where it is idling and how fast it drops to get to that RPM.

whats been happening? i'm guessing by the post his coolants been going down but not seeing any leaks? might want to have jason start a seperate thread on it. it could be leaking o-rings at the heads or cylinder gasket either one would heat the coolant and send it out the exhaust in a sweet smelling steam
 
yup losing coolant cant see it. putting new o rings in head probaly will do it. not sure if any steam has been seen. might be to slow of leak to be noticed.
 
Yeah I could start a new thread, probably will resort to that if new o rings don't solve the problem. Haven't seen steam yet, leak is slow but noticeable. I recently went 80 miles or so, hard to say how much was lost, but by the end pf the ride my temperature light was flashing.
