Hey guys. Long time lurker, first time poster.

I have a 96 vmax 600XT and I am upgrading the rear skid from a 98 vmax, sx, sxr I got off ebay. I am hoping for a little ride improvement. I will be following instruction I found here http://www.totallyamaha.net/forums/showthread.php?t=12296.

My questions:
1. are these the correct measurements I should be using?
(link says 03..i have 98...are they the same?)

2. Is the front mounting point for the "W" arm the same as my old skid or will I have to relocate. (picture in link shows no "old" front mount point)

Any help would be great.

I love my vmax! Blast to ride! most reliable sled in my group.

The 96 xt is a proaction skid, so I'd think you'd use the same holes since It's pretty much the same skid as what you putting in. Is the old skid badly broken or something? Going from a 96 proaction to a 98 proaction isn't really an upgrade.

Exactly, unless the old one is damaged why the switch? Wish i could find a VMAX XT skid but it looks like the xtra-10 will be picked up tomorrow!

The original skid is not damaged, it actually has new bushings and I replaced some wheel bearings and reinforced some things. I believe the shocks and springs to be in good shape. I just doesn't seem to have good weight transfer when I goose it. and the ride should be much better. The transfer rods almost seem to work backwards..Gap with no rider.. i get on and no gap. maybe i have a pivot point wrong or something...

The "new" skid was purchased off ebay. I was suckered in by words like, Bender transfer rods (seized) and Viper shocks. I did find working transfer rods but the thing is rough. It is certainly Beefier and the shocks/springs are noticeably larger and there is more transfer gap on control rods. I think the middle and rear mounting points will be different.. but hoping the front mount point is same.
this is looking more like a summer project. I think i will try to get the 96 pro action working properly for now. Any suggestions would be great.

Thought I would post some pics of the blue beast.
If I can figure out how.

As far as I know, your new skid uses the exact same holes as your old skid they are both proaction skids. All proaction skids mount the same. The only thing you'll gain are the adjustable transfer rods. Give them a lot of PB blaster and some heat and they should unfreeze. If I'm not mistaken the XT and the Viper have the same travel in their skids.

Thanks for the help. I will see how things line up.

Where is the snow????????

they are not nthe same the 96 bolts up different in the rear ..it has the 3 bolt pattern in back as compared to a one bolt for the 98!! and besides the xt skid, when setup right ,will be a better ride than the 98skid!

Thanks for the help. I am going to try to dial in the XT skid. I noticed there are no spacers on the transfer rods. I am sure that does not help things. I hope I can borrow them off the 98 but they are most likely thicker.
Any thoughts on track replacement? I have a worn out old ripsaw with 96 worn picks.
Thinking of losing the picks and trying a new Camoplast Cobra. I mostly trail ride and I hear the cobra hooks up very well. Anyone have one and will I miss my Heavy, Picked track??

I wish I could but they are a bit bigger. I would ride on a collapsed suspension right now. Where is the snow? :o|

On the track i don't think i will go back to studs as long as i own my XT i love the "extra" power i feel with the track free'd from all that weight (then again mine had 5 per lug when i bought it :O)

That is a lot of weight you were spinning around! Thanks for the advice.

If you get a chance could you measure those nylon spacers on your control rods... mine seem to be missing and I am not sure what size they are, 7mm, 10mm???

The soonest i can is this upcoming weekend, its in the enclosed trailer at the parents.

Based on the picture i have however it doesn't look like i have any spacers on my rods at all.

I think my dad may have some on his 94 (with the 96 XT Skid) I can try and check that when i am over there sunday if you would like.
