01 sx700r clutch mod question

Ordered all parts needed for the clutch mod and will attemp to install them myself. I do have a question on the 2-3 engagement shims. Where do the shims go as I do not see any on the pdf file of the clutches. Also I will do the head gasket mod, but I am a little skeptical as to the jetting part with all the grades of gases available in our area having ethanol. Anyone have opinions on this? Just wondering......
 
the shims will sit in the clutch cover where the spring sits up against.If you are going to do the head gasket mod..only use premium fuel and nothing else.Just run safe jetting for your altitude and temps you run mostly or even go 1 size up on jetting.

For what it's worth, I am also working on the clutch mods recommended by Turk for my 2001 SX700R. I was given a part # (90201-45592) for the shims off this site which unfortunately turned out to be the wrong size. The inside diameter of the shims was about 5 mm too small and the shims will not fit in my clutch cover. If you happen to find a different part# for the shims that work for you please let me know. I may decide to purchase them. Although I don't believe the shims will do much other than raise the engagement rpms a little. No speed gains from what I can figure. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

And a little side note, I installed my new 51/43 helix and added the recommended rivets to my clutch weights and rode it yesterday with just those mods. I'd say it was a noticable difference and the sled seemed to pull a lot harder. Top speed is about the same. I'm still waiting on my new 14.5 rollers and I'm not sure what they are going to add to the performance. At $25 per roller I'm tempted to return them and just ride it with the new mods I've already done. Oh, and the new rivets in my weights brought the peak RPM's right to the desired 8500 rpm range. No over reving anymore...

I'm going to pass on doing the head gasket mod for now. It might add a little extra power, but fuel economy may suffer and with the added risk of failure I just don't think it's worth it. Although having never done it before, I don't really know if it's worth it or not. :) If you do the mod, feel free to post an update of what you think. I'd be real curious...

when I got my engagement rings..they also wouldn't drop in and seat on the cover either.They where tight.So I just took my dremel and slowly removed material on the inside of the rings until it dropped down loose enough..was a bit of a pain.Again don't know why they weren't correct to begin with.

Agreed. Not sure why they don't fit right in. The dremel is a good idea. I may have to do that. Is it worth the hassle though do you think? Isn't the only gain of the rings is to raise the engagement RPM? Maybe it helps with backshift or something? Since I give my little boy and nephews rides from time to time I don't know that I want the aggressive take offs at a higher rpms. I'll have to keep thinking about that one... Thanks!

the shims you got were for the earlier clutches using the narrower spring. what you needed was part # 90201-483P9-00. i would be interested in those before you attempt to alter them. i may have used ones in the correct size.

with the smaller rollers, you should notice an increased engagement and a bit more bite on the belt.

Thanks bluemonster1, sorry if I seem a little slow here but this is new to me as I usually send out the sled for service at the dealer. But I've ordered myself the neccessary tools and will attempt this mod on my own with a little guidance from a friend. The clutch cover you refer to is it on the primary drive or the secondary driven clutch? Don't want to seem like a noob....but I guess we all gotta get our feet wet at some point. :bash:
 
if you like your clutching the way it is but just want higher engagement you would use a spring with higher inital force and the same total force as your previous spring. so yes. you can use a spring or shims to accomplish this.
