I was at a radar run this past weekend, and had my gps on my sled, every run I did I reset the max speed, and was always 6 or7 mph faster than what the radar claimed, I would run 82 on radar, and the gps would say 88, run 80 on radar, and the gps would say 86, the last run I made the radar said 79, and my gps said 91mph. Any of you run into this? wondering which is more accurate?
The gps isn't accurate unless you are letting off the throttle right where the radar stops. If you even hold your throttle 5ft past the radar your gps will be higher.
What distance was that run?

I realize there was some human error, but 6mph in what 5-10'? doesn't seem right to me. tried as good as I could to get out of the throttle as soon as i passed the cones, as there was almost no shut down area there.

660' I was told, but looked short to me, more like 500' didn't measure it myself. Kind of a fun run deal, not sanctioned, ran by the local tavern league.

FRIGG,IN RADAR GUNS ARE TERRIBLE UNLESS RE CALIBRATED AFTER EVERY USE. ONLY ACCURATE ONES ARE THE ONES COPS HAVE. GPS IS RIGHT ON THE MONEY. HELL THAT WILL CLOCK YA WALKING TO YOUR MAIL BOX. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Maybe the laser was not positioned correctly? Gps is usually accurate within meters. If where off the throttle ay the cone, I would say Gps. Assuming you have a quality Gps unit and good sat signal.

Momentum after the gun reading would throw this off for sure... NO WAY you can release as soon as the radar reading has been taken.
GPS speed can be somewhat inaccurate for acceletion applications. Ie drag racing. Most GPS units only take a reading every 1 second or longer. Some are faster but require an extreamly good antenna. For top speed runs of a mile or so, a GPS is extemly accurate as it has time to measure speed over an extended time. I have used both GPS and Radar for measuring speeds. I much prefer GPS as it is much easier to use and no recalibration every so often. As for which is more accurate in your instance, upon accelation if the radar reading was taken at the exact same distance and location, I suspect the radar. As you were probably still accelerating after the radar reading was being taken. Al

There was actually a guy standing there with a gun, (high tech hey) no speed trap or laser at all, so I would assume his readings were not accurate every time either, like I said it was off consistantly, so it was not a real big deal, just makes you wonder if he was clocking every one the same way or not? On the bright side, I ended up 3rd fastest, and my brother in law won the trail stock 500 non studded class on my 2000 SXR (65MPH) so it was a good day regardless.
Alswagg, I have read that same thing about GPS, and makes complete sense, just can't see the 6mph difference in the time from passing the cone, to letting off the throttle, maybe 1-2 mph, but 6?

The gun will not catch u right to the finish if it is positioned at the finish line. If your letting off where the guy is standing u ran past the guns pick up area by quite a few feet not 5 to 10.

I remember 20+ years ago I was doing some radar runs with my old '90 Hauck modded Exciter. They had two radar guns there that day. One gun showed I was running 93mph and the other gun was saying 99mph. I was more inclined to believe the lower of the two. Everyone there was quoting there sled off the faster one. Human nature I guess. LOL!
