Just finished my swap of an x-10 skid into my 95Vmax 600. Very pleased with it. Have not taken it out for a ride yet due to its 60 freaking degrees outside!!!! I want to thank everyone who gave me pointers on this forum, you were are a huge help. I am just waiting for some replacement bearings and bushings and it will be ready to rip down the trails again. So thank you toeveryone with you help. This forum is awesome!!!!

Be sure to write a review after you get to ride it. We all have heard of this swap and many still have 94-96 V-maxes. Please share some honest feedback.

Use the stock rear mounts just relocate the holes on the tunnel it worked out very well for me.

I'm 100% positive you will be shocked at the increase in ride quality! Just watch the transfer blocks, if they aren't set fairly tight you will get A LOT of ski lift...

When you did your swap did you change the front shock mounting position to the upper hole? I was reading some stuff on setting up the xtra-10 last night to aviod the dreaded "wiggle" when moving at speed down the trail. I really wish we had some GOD DAMN SNOW around here before my next trip to mercer so i can play with my ski shims/new skid settings. getting everything sandblasted and painted in the next day or so then it's time for reassembly. I need to see if I can source a couple wheels, 2 of mine were more damaged then they looked but then again i am gonna run my old shitty track until next season when I'll toss the camoplast i have sitting here under it.smokingcrater said:I'm 100% positive you will be shocked at the increase in ride quality! Nope, didn't touch the upper mount and haven't had any wierd behaviour either. As far as I know, that wiggle was when the skid was in the original sled. vmax's are pretty well planted, due to the barely functional front end suspension, so that may be enough to take care of it. With that said, I know for a fact I've never topped out the vmax, I've personally had it to maybe 70-75 or so, so maybe it only happens faster than that?

Didn't touch the fnt shock either. But also have not gotten to test it out yet cause we have no freaking snow. Might have to do a 7 hour drive just to test it.

I only noticed it when riding my friends old Arctic Cat Jag, told him it definitely needed more pressure on the front of the skid, would wiggle in powder of 2" when doing anything over 40mph. Do you run factory or aftermarket skis? Any spacers in them? I put 1/4" in mine but I'm thinking i might remove them with the removal of the drop brackets.smokingcrater said:Nope, didn't touch the upper mount and haven't had any wierd behaviour either. jmlarson: no kidding, this sled has been run once, for a total of 12 miles on Illinois trails this year. Trying to make a trip to Mercer for the weekend of the 18th but really getting tired of taking it up there untested and hoping for the best. Luckily my friend always brings an extra sled with just in case. So far I've put more miles on his sled then my own....it's a long story for another thread.

I'm running plastic camoplast skis on it, which are just slightly higher than the stock.

i've been thinking about doing something like this to my 95' Vmax 600. Just wonder at the cost of doing this, is it really worth it? Let me know how the ride was and if it really makes that big a difference? I think for the money compared to buying a new one, it seems well worth the money, but then again, I haven't talked to anyone yet who has done this and how it ran?
Thanks for your input, to anyone who has done this!

absolutely no regrets with the conversion, other than that I didn't do it sooner... I would have actually sold the vmax had i not done the conversion, its the wife's sled and she was ready to quit riding because her back was starting to hurt. Since the conversion, not a single complaint.
It depends on what other sleds you ride, but the stock vmax is REALLY bad. If that is a 1, and my '01 AC ZR 600 is a 10, the vmax after the conversion would be a solid 7 if not 8 for ride quality, at least for the back. (the front is still a weak point obviously)
Cost for me was well under $200, probably under $100 not including the beer. I got the skid cheap, $50 or so. I had to replace bearings in a couple idlers. Other than that it was about $20 in metal stock from lowes.

My total conversion cost is gonna end up around $175 but that includes 10 of each bearing for the skid, new Hyfaxes, the skid itself, new grease fittings, a fox shock, and some spray paint. I should note that the price of these skids has started to go up with the popularity of the swaps picking up but the supply, due to this seasons lack of snowfall has tapered off. My skid was actually in pretty bad shape when I got it but they cut me an awesome deal on it.smokingcrater said:absolutely no regrets with the conversion, other than that I didn't do it sooner... smokin: how many sets of idlers do you have outside the rails on your sled? Noticed there was a set of mounting holes in the back for a 3rd set of bogie wheels and was tempted to find another set of mounts and bogies for this thing, I really only want to change my hyfaxes once a year once this whole ordeal is done.

3 total sets outside the rails. Its what it came with, no changes...

I should have said 3 sets + the rear axle. If you see the holes about 8" ahead of the rear axle that's actually mouting holes for another set of idlers. I've toyed with the idea of picking up another set, i guess i'll see how the hyfaxes hold up with the snow conditions and go from there! Thanks for all of your input on this project, i really can't wait to get this thing back on the trails!smokingcrater said:3 total sets outside the rails. Its what it came with, no changes...

I haven't noticed any wear on the hyfax with the setup above, but I don't put on the insane miles some guys do... The wife put on 300 or so last year, all in good snow conditions and very little hard pack trail.

I have camoplase ski's as well before the swap they were very nice have about 300 miles on them Still waiting for snow. I wish the storm that hit colorado and nebraska came this way with a blizzard, this winter is terrible!

My cost for the swap was under 200 as well including all new bearings and bushings
