I am curious about the "update porting" on vintatagevmax.com, it says "The addition power output resulting from these engine modifications requires changes to the engine's oiling system. For 1984 ~ 1986 V-Max models (VMX540H/J/K) you may either retain the standard oil pump and use premix fuel at a ratio of 50:1 or change to the 1983 oil pump. For 1983 models, no change is required. Note that this additional lubrication is necessary to ensure connecting rod and crankshaft bearing operation, not to prevent piston seizure."
do you really need that much extra oil if the porting is done to an engine?

THAT UPDATED PORTING REALLY WORKS. THAT WAS ALL DONE BY YAMAHA R&D. PROBLEY TODAY, I DON,T REALLY KNOW IF YOU NEED THE 83 OIL PUMP. OILS HAVE COME ALONG WAY SINCE 1984. ALL BEING SYNTHETIC. 3:16 (yammie tony)

so bassically your saying i WILL see a dramatic power increase? and i run poooolaris VES gold (which is syn) in all of my sleds, i love the smell!! so just using the oiler would be fine with the update porting? or should i run i light premix like an 80:1 or 60:1?

YAMAHA CLAIMED 9 HORSE. AND SURE THAT RATIO AS A BACK-UP WOULD NOT HURT. SO 85 STOCK, UPDATED PORTING 94 hp. BACK THAN MANY ADDED BIGGER CARBS, PRETTY HOT SLED. CLOSE TO 100 HP. 3:16 (yammie tony)

I ran the update porting back in the eighty's and YES it makes a big difference in performance, Like Tony said about 9 HP but it sure feels like more then that. If you are going to run it hard all the time then I would add a little to the gas, but if you are going to trail ride it and only take it on the lake a few times then that oil you are using would be OK just running the oil injection. I ran mine with out the extra oil and never had any trouble with the bearing.
Back in 84 Yamaha had a new oil pump for the 540 it is the one they used on the 84-91 Vmax, and they offered it to any one with a 83 to up grade to the new 84 pump for $18.00 a copy as it used half the oil as the 83 pump.
I was told by a Yamaha rep back in the spring of 84 that the so called "UPDATE PORTING" was supposed to be in the 83 Vmax but at the last minute Yamaha decided to back off the port timing to give it a little better mid range and were afraid that it might be a 81 -82 SRX all over again as the update port timing is very similar to the 81 SRX port timing. That is why the oil pump is so much richer on the 83's as the " UP DATE PORTING " states, and that is also why the carb jetting for the 83's were so rich from that Factory as they didn't have time to dial in the new Porting. The rep also told me that the 85 Vmax was going to have it put back in, but again Yamaha decided not to at the last minute. The 83 oil pump had a Black paint code and the new one has a red paint code. Most people took there 83 in to have the new pump installed as the oil saving added up to a lot, I know mine was updated to the new pump.
I have a set of cylinders and head that have the update porting and hopfully this summer I am going to reinstall it on my 83. Can't wate.

from what ive gathered premixing like it says on that site isnt needed since the oil back then was way different from what it is now. im thinking im gonna run an 80;1 premix since i do like to hear my machines opend up. and i do run synthetic oil (ves gold) in all of my machines. Its mainly because i love the smell and it gives me a piece of mind knowing that lubrication is never a problem. thanks for helping me through all of this guys! this forum is great!

Tony .. The set I have now I bought on line They look really good so I am guessing they were done by a professional. I checked all the port heights & shapes and they are right on. The head I plained my self. The pistons I sent to Swain Tech and had the skirts & domes coated. The plating on the cylinders are OK, but I am going to send them to Millennium this summer to have them replated.I will talk to you more about this Saturday when I see you.. Jeff..
