All,
I just picked up a 97 700sx today, studded with about 144 studs all stock other than the track and studs. around 4500 miles.

Are there any things i need to really look at that these sleds are known for?

The sled has 125lbs of compression on all three cylinders and starts on about 3-4 pulls truly cold.

I do need to hook the parking brake back up and get a cross shaft for the rear idler wheels the shaft and wheels.

I do believe there was a crankshaft recall, not 100% but I believe so. Have a Yamaha dealer run te vin. Ditch the steel skis for some plastics, inspect the w arm!!!!!! Most likely is thinned out and cracked, there are threads on here for reinforcement and repair for them.

97 had a not so great bearing design on the mag side of the crank. This can be updated to a 98 bearing ewith little trouble. Make sure the seals are good on both sides of the crank. These sleds are also known to eat stators. Mine went thru three of them. Finally used a LED tail light and a PIAA bulb to reduce the load on the stator. With the age and mileage check the plug caps and reeds.
Great litle machine when well maintained. Runs like a slot car thru the trails. They just don't have the ability to suck up the big bumps.
Best part of the sled is the sound of that red head tripple.

Yeah i like the sound, think it needs the carbs cleaned a little as it is not holding steady RPM when idling it will crank up to like 3k then drop down after a bit but seems to be racing a long a little at idle.

I had LED taillights in the DX and XT so guess i will swap the DX and SX :) don't need to sell the LED light with it.

Do you guys know much on the Ski's i am hoping i can make the set of Skidoo flex skis i have laying around fit, they worked on the XT with a new set of spacers.

I had a set of precisions on my 99 sx, they needed a custom trimmed rubber bumper and different mountings bolts is all, upgraded to triple threat x2's tho!

Can anyone give me pointers or better yet pics of the parking brake setup on the chaincase, i have the part coming off ebay that appears to be missing and the cable is tied up but it may be easier if i see what i am doing first :) i did look at the oem parts diag, however they do not show a lot of detail in that area.

If no one has replied by the time i get home will take a pic n post for you. These are a great machine and you will enjoy alot. Dont know about the crank thing the other posters were talking about. Think that was on 98 srx but could be wrong. I had one i bought brand new back in 97 and put 7600 hard miles on it. Did blow a crank seal at that mileage,so maybe thats what they are talking about. At that point should be torn down and looked over anyway. Just got another one back in oct. One thing to look at. Pull recoil off and check out ring thats mounted to stator. Make sure no cracks in it. If you have handle bar risers or want them you need to reinforce your steering post. I found this out the hard way with this one I just bought. If you can find viper shocks for it put them under it greatly improved ride. Or do what I did and put a vector or apex or polaris or skidoo skid in it and really really good ride. Anyway if you have an idea on it or question plenty of good advice on here.

here is pic of cable connection. hope its clear enough

Sweet that is kinda what i was assuming now to see if i can get it on with the chaincase installed :/ Does your sled have reverse looks like you have some extra goodies in that area (i could be mistaken only looked under the hood for like 10 minutes so far)

yeah have reverse. what part did you have to order. if it is any thing to do with linkage you shoulds have no problems putting your parts on. My sx is on the fixer upper forums if you want to check out. check out the earlier post. Ive had to fix er up twice because of broken handlebar tree incident. (what i was warning you about).

I got the two bars springs and bolt i hope the linkage is all correct that is currently on the sled haven't looked at it that close to know if its all there yet.
