Help! Crazy oil consumption on MM

Hi
I went riding today in powder and the sled (01 MM 700) used half a tank of oil in 52 km, what is wrong? Is the oil pump toast? I tried to check the oil cable adjustment, altough I didn't measure it it seemed to be where it is supposed to be, at 22 mm, or will 1 mm give much more/less oil consumption?

No 1mmwont make that much differance. If no leaks I would think pump has went out. When they go bad they pump oil full bore. Seems like to much oil for even bad pump to explain.
 
sounds like the oil pump cable is not slipped back together at the adjustment point. It will use that much oil if this is the case.
 
I checked the oil cable and it was back together at the adjustment point and the aftermarket cable seems to work as supposed. I guess I will have to look for a leak in the bellypan before I order a new pump.

You don't mean the cable? I cannot see a brass fitting on the oil line?

How long have you had the aftermarket cable installed? Some of the aftermarket cables don't allow enough adjustment to turn the pump down within Yamaha specs. I intalled one and went thru 2 qts. on a 60 mile ride. I turned it down as much as I could on that cable, but still burned way too much. I had to replace it.
 
Not for very long. I didn't measure it, but the exposed wire length doesn't seem all that far off. I got the aftermarket cable from Rich, he knows his stuff.
 
maybe he means the nipple fittings down below where the lines connect up to on the pump....the check valves are to to ensure that oil is always ready to be drawn by the fuel pump and pushed to the crank bearings.If the valves were not there,oil may drain backwards and be harder to draw back up when need.There are 2 valves..arrows pointing to crank and to fuel pump.

What does the 22 mm exposed wire do? Does this mean that you can squeeze the throttle in 22mm before the oil pump arm starts to move at all? Mine starts moving immediately. Could this be the problem?
 
Talked to yet another expert. He said it could be the oil seal that is toast, allowing oil to flow directly into the cases. Anyway, I may have to order both the oil pump and seal, I don't intend to take it for repair twice.

I may be wrong but I beleive the 22mm is the stroke of pump arm. By pulling cable adjuster apart you are moving pump arm. For example if oil pump arm was seized and wont move then you shouldnt be able to pull adjuster apart. 22mm is the sweet spot per yamaha. Lets say for example your measurement was 10mm, at idle pump would think your half throttle. For example your measurement was 40mm (not possible example only) you would have to be at half throttle for pump to think you were idleing. Confusing right? Smaller number= more oil, Larger number=less oil
