Drive train grinding

Have a 1997 SX700. There is some kind of grinding/binding noise at low speeds. "Seems" to go away at higher speeds. Can't tell if it's secondary clutch, chaincase, or maybe the axle and drive cogs?

I did notice, however, that the 2ndary clutch seems to have some free play where you move it back and forth about a 1/4 to 1/2". I never noticed that before, but is that normal?

Any ideas on this one or even trying to diagnose?

Which foot do you feel it in? Mine is always the left foot leading me to the drive axle bearing left side lots of penatrating fluid on the two set screws all around the bearing and let it soak it tends to sieze up sometimes that's the bearing that always goes on mine..

Yes, there should be some free play in the secondary. I don't remember the spec off hand but I think it is just under 1/4" if I remember right.
For the grinding check the bearings, chain case, drive axle and jack shaft. Also if you have your track over tightened it can sound & feel like something is grinding.

My Vmax4 felt like some grinding was going on right before the main drive axle broke...wierd, but it was for about 15 miles (I was trying to get back to the trailer) off and on until I grabbed a handfull of brake then it was done.

more then likely the driveshaft bearings or jackshaft bearings, both tend to just explode out of no where. Don't worry, it's not a Yamaha only problem, my friends Z1 just blew up his coming off the trailer and onto the driveway.
