I have a 2002 Viper ER with Hauck/CPR triples, V force reeds, Hauck clutching, extra heat exchanger, 144+ studs, bergstrom triple points with ski savers. I'm assuming the jetting is the recomendation from hauck as they set everything up properly. Just bought this sled this year as described above. I did not do any of the work.
I'm noticing that it doesn't have the power I thought it would have and it is an absolute gas hog. Gets maybe 6mpg and can't come close to hanging with my brothers stock mxz800 in the straights. A friends stock Viper runs by it as well. Seems to be very touchy with ambient air temperature. When its in the teens it seems to run stronger and get better mileage, but anything close to 32f. and it is horrible. It also seems to sputter and backfire occassionally when I start it after coming off the trailer.
I've cleaned the carbs and replaced TORS earlier in the season. Seemed to run stronger before the TORS was replaced. I checked the plugs and they have a light brown look to them (which seems normal), no oily buildup or grey.
I'm wondering if I should try seating the fuel screw and then moving out two turns when ambient air temp is higher? Should I check the power valves? Or is this just how this setup runs (what a disappointment), but everyone on here seems to like the setup on their sleds. I'm a major amateur with carbs and don't want to seize the thing, hence my reluctance to mess with the lean/rich issue.
Thanks for your help.

Forgot to add it only pulls about 8400 rpm in the straights when it is running poorly. Ran up to 9100 when it was running better in the colder weather. I also put a new belt on which helped a bit, but seems to be running low on the secondary. Does anyone know if you must use a special belt with this Hauck setup? Again thanks and sorry for all the questions.

Sounds like you have a jetting/clutching issue, that is on the edge. Do you know what is in it for weights, springs and helix?

At the moment I don't, I would need to pull it apart. I can just see the name Hauck on the secondary.
Ran like crazy earlier in the season in colder air temp, pulled 97mph on GPS (112 on the dreamometer) across a cornfield and got closer to 9mpg, which is what I expected from the setup.
Thanks for the help.

check your powervalves just to rule out. make sure there are no pull throughs and they are clean and adjusted properly
You should call Hauck and ask them to give you the carburator setup for those pipes.
Dont think you have to jet for the reeds.
You could also get the proper clutch setup from Hauck, once you know what you have in there.
Should check to see if the carburators are vented to the air box, mention it to Hauck if they are.

Thanks guys. I'll check things out and report back.

I would take the carbs apart and see what jetting is in the sled (mains, needle settings, pilots)as if it runs good and starts to get good gas mpg when its way cold out, it must be pig rich!! then in warmer temps, hence the low rpm and lack of performance, its basicly like riding it around with choke half on.
If you post a pic of the underhood, i can see what pipes you have and give you a jetting set up. hauck never made pipes, he just has other companys put his name on them and sells them, so they are either CPR pipes or Aaens.

sounds like it could be a power valve pull thru, or too rich of jetting, or clutching off and sense you said hauck setup the sled, i'm gonna put money on a crap clutch setup. you probably have a "V" stamped helix, w/green @ 60*, and 8dn-10 weights with a bolt in the tip and orange primary spring??? check carbs like already suggested and check power valves for pull thrus and proper adjustment. also check clutches for components and report back. if you were closer, i'd tell you to drop the sled off and let me fix what hauck screwed up.
Hey guys. you dont have to change jets for reeds. Right ?

No u don't have to jet for reeds
Gentlemen, the winner is sticking power valves. I pulled them today took me about 45 minutes to get em out. Yuck! Carbon all over the place and a black glue like substance in the port itself.
Thanks to everyone for your help and suggestions. I learned alot!!!!

Hi. Does both CPR and AAEN pipes fit with reverse? I have seen people getting problems with other pipes when they have electric start and reverse. Which ones gives the highest HP, and works the best? Why did Hauck switch producer ?
I am planning to build a real killer viper this winter, so i would be thankful for any information you guys might have. Ive been driving Yamaha MC Xpress turbochargers earlier, but now its time for a older viper project.

My older Hauck/CPRs fit with the ER, but honestly not real well. Best to check the manufacturers and get a definitive answer from them.
Problems we've had with my older set were clearing the front bumper support and difficulty protecting the powervalve cables. Had to bend and cut the support and tape up the powervalves.
I can't speak to the power as I haven't had a chance to run them on snow, jetted properly and powervalves adjusted. Thanks to this site all has been fixed except the darn snow.
Pray for snow.

Dawolf, you got lucky if the valves were stuck but they didn't pull through...
Yamaha Norway, I have SLP's and my uncle has Benders. I like the fit of his benders quite a bit better than my SLP's, plus Benders have the same peak hp rpm as stock, 8600 rpm. I think this is better for the timing.

Stretched and unadjusted cables kept them from yanking loose. Valves probably hadn't moved in awhile. Previous owner stuck it to me. Won't happen again lesson learned.

Thanks.
I am planning to buy a Viper Mountain with reverse, and put fox float evo, or Øhlins shocks on it, ported cylinders and heads, Vforce 3 reeds, and triple pipes. Hoping for 160 hp. I also want a 151" fingertrack, Apex handlebars with adjustable riser. New SLP powder pro skis, M Performance trailing arms. I want the 2004 viper s red / black hood. Low black windshield, non slip, and billet 8" wheels. Larger rear cooler, clutch kit. And of course som paint work. Torque arm.
I am considering to buy a raceported crank case and 780 big bore cylinders to use in summertime racing. But i am afraid the realibilty of the engine would be weaken. I think i need a exhaust, and water temp controller.
I guess it will use a lot of fuel, and might not be useful for long trips, and mountain riding. But i want to smoke my friends` pro rmk 800
I am sorry for my bad english.
