2000 sxr 700..... gonna attempt to clean carbs and my own maintence this spring.... first off taking the carbs off... i am looking at the photos on the tech pages and it looks pretty simple..please remember i can hardly hold a screwdrive, i am not handy at all... but gonna try anyway.. tired of paying mechanic.. heres my first question, i once took off carbs from a 96 vmax, and i remember that w/the choke i had to make sure choke was open and pay careful w/ the plunger things, how do i do this w/the red head triple? anything special w/the choke?... and also it says to unhook oil cable and throttle cable, where do i unhook these cables from? is it from the throttle itself or down by the carbs? last but not least, am i better off waiting till next fall to clean so that i can start sled afterwards, or clean it after this riding season? and then wait till winter to start again?

First off I have a 2000 sxr 700 and have cleaned carbs at least 6 times and as many on the 3 srx's and I have never messed with oil cable for carb cleaning. I was in your shoes 2 years ago, Expect I am pretty handy. Its not any where near as donting of a task as you think. Wait till fall to clean. Take top off airbox and hog at least 1 can of fogging oil in carbs for summer. Remove throttle and choke cables from carb. (much like brake cables on a pedal bike). Removing air box makes it alot easier as well as you know boots have a good seal putting it back toghter. It may help to have site up and looking at pictures your first time. Pay attention to what your fuel screws are set at and compare to tech page where yammi says there should be. Be very maticulus especially your first time. I learned how to rebuild redhead cuz I skipped the needle and seats in a hurry to ride it. Needle and seats are under floats which can be a PITA sometimes!
Yankeeslover DON'T take this wrong.... Go out and buy a good set of screw drivers as the cheap department store stuff is NOT all what it is cracked up to be...
Would suggest either Craftsman professional(Kmart or Sears should carry them, Williams(mfgrs for Snap on), Snap on - (if your in the mood to spend lots of $$$), Matco, etc. I bought the Craftsman Professional screwdrivers and have noticed a TON of difference in how the blade or end of the screwdriver bites or holds the screw, plus the handles are more comfy than the cheaper clear handled Craftsman.
Cleaning the carburetors is a pretty straight forward task and you should be fine. Remember force will not fix things it will only destroy them. Do some research(gooogle search) on cleaning carbs (2 cycle/stroke dirtbikes and or snomobiles) as they are pretty much the same animal. Do you have compressed air handy? If not maybe a can of computer duster will work to clean and blow out the passages... you will also need some sort of item to poke through the jets to ensure that they are optimally clear. I use #(number drills), some may use torch tip cleaners. You will need to make sure that whatever you use that you cannot break it off inside the jet(to keep you from having to buy any extra parts), heck in a pinch I even used a twist tie from a garbage bag or loaf of bread... Good luck and take your time.
'96 v-max carbs are different than the '98-up triples... You are going to un-hook the cable from the carb rack by rotating the cam lever that actuates the carbs and rotate the cable to the relief portion and push the barrel out of its location this will un-hook the throttle portion, NOW you will need to remove the throttle cable adjuster from the carb rack and this will completely remove the throttle cable from the carb rack. The choke cable is kinda the same but a little different.YOu will not need to mess with the oil cable. at a point you will get to a point that you will need to plug the carb heater line as it will drip causing a huge mess...(but this almost to the point of the carbs being completely removed)
It wont hurt to clean the carbs in the spring and let them sit dry all summer, if you clean them in the fall you may have a bunch of gunk by then plus you can fine tune in the fall and be set for the season, I know when the cooler weather gets here I get anxious and want to ride and hate working on stuff to get it going.
