I have a 1998 Vmax XTC 700 with a comet clutch. I bought a yamaha 18mm puller for the XTC, which does not fit. I think the comet clutch has a 9/16-18 thread? It's definately smaller than the 18mm. What puller do I need? I suspect the clutch is a 108 EXP but I'm not positive. Will a 217153A puller work? like this one:

The very early comet 108 exp had a 9/16 thread, all later had a 5/8 thread.

Screw the pullers and just use the hydraulic method but you'll need access to air tools and a propane torch. Go to your local ace hardware store and pickup a 9/16x18 threaded bolt and a 7/8x14 threaded bolt(i know they claim it's 9/16 or 5/8 but mine was 7/8") and a with about 2.5" of threads. Turn the sled on it's side, remove the clutch retaining bolt. Wrap the bolt you picked up with teflon tape(go heavy on it, wrap it a good 5-6 times). Fill the center of the clutch with boiling hot water. Thread the bolt into the end of the clutch and then run it down with an impact wrench. It will remove the clutch faster than any puller I've ever used.

Yep the 108c is 7/8 inch thread not the 108 exp.

Mine is a 108EXP and has a 7/8" thread, then again it may have been drilled out and retapped in the past. I have no idea.sxr1000 said:Yep the 108c is 7/8 inch thread not the 108 exp.
does it have a round aluminum cover or a triangle steel?

Round Aluminum 6 bolt. Nothing has added up right on this sled so who knows. My guess is it started as the 9/16", threads got destroyed so they drilled it out and tapped it with a 7/8x14.sxr1000 said:does it have a round aluminum cover or a triangle steel?

Or they may have changed the fixed sheave with a 108c.
