Venture 600 water pump

I have a small antifreeze drip coming from the left hand side of my 2003 venture 600. From what I am being told its a water pump problem and it needs to be changed. My question is how long should this take? Thoughts? :jack:
 
From what I am told your water pump is more on your right hand side of sled. Is it dripping out of belly pan on left side or out of the engine on the left side. I beleive your best plan is to pull motor out of sled, Might be able to do it with it still in engine bay but I would suggest unhooking everything so you can roll engine backwards to expose pump cover. At least thet way you can leave primary on engine. I would plan on 3-4 hours and be very suprised if it took less
 
I would count on the better part of a day, plus 24 hours to let the loctite dry, considering it sounds like you are unfamiliar with this set up. You could also count on the better part of three hundred for parts. (In Canada, anyway) If you are the gambling type, you may get away with changing only the washer/ seal that holds on the impeller. That is 15 to 20 bucks. The risk would be it doesnt stop the leak, but at this point you havent had to lift the engine yet. I was going to do this, but then after looking at the rubber on the mechanical seal, there were very fine cuts in the face of it from a sliver of aluminum getting in there. I was thinking about changing the rubber/spring part and ceramic part and not the pressed in part of the mechanical seal, thinking I still wouldnt have to lift the engine, but I have 9000 miles on it and figured I might as well suck it up and change the shaft, bearings and impeller too which I am still waiting for parts. I havent been past the seal yet. Be sure to search the forums for how to change the waterpump. Or ask Bluemonster, he had many of the same questions and curse words I had. Of course, this is if it is your waterpump leaking which it likely is.

no need to remove engine . drain antifreeze, remove cover, replace seals and impellar if stripped,( Mine was )! simple procedure, takes an hour to two.
 
Sounds like a lot of work. Before I commit to anything is there any other simple problems I should look at that could be causing this antifreeze leak? There are only 5000 km on the sled but I'm not sure I'm willing to sink money into a costly repair at this point.

Safe to assume its a pressure is if it only leaked for a lil bit after sled was ran. As in gravity alone not letting coolant out. You need to figure out where leak is before you drcide to not even bother with it cuz its to hard. You can either start sled and find leak or get the radiator cap designed for pressurizing system. It will only take 4-6lbs pounds of pressure, Over pressuring system can and will damage other parts. I would hate to replace/repair water pump if it was only the carb heaters leaking.
 
is your engine a tripple or twin?... if it's a tripple, the problems is similar to the 700 red heads water pump... I've gone through this carefully and I do believe the culprit is the shaft... you may get by if you dope up the shaft/impellor splines to help stop wobble and keep coolant from leaking past the splines.... let locktite/ sealant locktite sit 24 hours before reassembly and coolant refill... here's my old post fresh after the repair..

Today I finished my waterpump change. I did the shaft, impeller, one bearing, expensive washer, and oil seal. I now have a more accurate time estimate. Like Yammy says there was no need to lift the engine.
Remove exhaust including y pipe. Half hour
Drain coolant, remove cover and impeller Half hour
Dig out mechanical seal and oil seal.
My shaft was worn
Remove circlip
Pull shaft out Half hour
Put it all back together Half hour
Look for wrenches you just had a half hour ago Half hour
Total about two hours Like yammy said.
New antifreeze goes in tomorrow after loctite dries.
I think the engine needs to be taken apart to change bearing on the oil pump end. Not sure. Not at this time.
