What do other states do???

Have a question I want to lay out there. Are You guys in other states or even Canada allowed to ride atv's on sled trails in summer?If not do your respective states have public or private riding areas? Ive always heard of the michigan dunes back in the early 90's when I was into the quad scene. Is this still open??? I wouldnt mind getting another quad but just no where to really ride here in wny. Albany makes sure they get your dime to register your machine but then you have no where to take it. Just like to here from some of you guys out there n see how other places do things.
 
I used to ride the tracks in n.y before they were turned into greenways. It sucks, been riding those sine the age of 12. Like you say quick to take the $ but no place to ride. Lived in Livingston county.
 
Some of the trails in MI are mixed traffic trails ie snowmobile and orv. There are designated orv trails that seem to take you in a 15 mile circle back to your truck. Wolf lake trails in lake county are an example of mixed traffic trails. Some of the counties in the northern LP allow orvs on the shoulder of county roads Which makes it nice to not have to trailer. Silver lake sand dunes are open to ORVs and there are alot of trails to run in the UP. I had a Banshee but decided to get rid of it. There are areas in the LP like Baldwin and kalkaska to ride but doing a 20 mile loop back to the truck didn't rEally appeal to me...they are illegal to operate on public lane and roads so my quad served little purpose going around in circles in the yard. Oh and I use my boat 10 times more than I ever did the quad!
 
Currently, you cannot run your ATV within the right of way, on any State of Michigan designated roads (M-route, US-route, I-route designations). You can run your snowmobile within the right of way, off of the maintained portion of roadway, but not on limited access right of way (freeways). You can run ATV's on all county roads, on the shoulder if paved, as far as I know, in the U.P. anyways. Township and city ordinances differ, so you'd have to ask around about those if planning a trip to a certain area. Pretty much any 2-track thru state land is fair game also, as are snowmobile trails thru state land or on county gravel roads. A group called SORVA is trying to work out all the bugs in our system, making connectors between inaccesible points. Hopefully someday, I'll be able to jump on my quad and drive it to my parents house in Hancock without issue. For now, with local knowledge, I would have no issue burning thru several tanks of gas in a day, just in Luce county. This would be the same for the majority of the U.P. in my opinion.

we have one Provincial Park(Spruce Woods) here where quads have trails set up to ride.Otherwise hit the Country gravel roads and dirt roads..and the ditch's.Only thing in the Park one year there was a fire started from a quads exhaust..so they all have to have resonators to eliminate sparks,especially when things are dry out.
 
I was told otherwise by a CO. I was told you cannot ride on seasonal roads county roads state roads or state land period. The was CO mike wells in newaygo county Michigan. He told me to keep it on private land or designated orv trails or I would be getting a tickets. That was buh bye banshee
 
For what it's worth that banshee was fast and sounded awesome with Toomey T5's! Sold it and bought a small boat. I miss the sound and arm pull but just a little!

depend if you live in a small community or not.I know someone out here who rode his quad from 1 small little community and into the main street of another small district and got caught.Cops stopped him and he lost his drivers license for a year..go figure..
 
I personally do not like quads,I think they are boring really...to big and bulky.I would prefer riding a nice dirt bike instead..way more fun factor there.

In the U.P., I would tell a CO to go pound sand if he informed me of that. No way they could enforce it up here. Too many 1000's of miles of backroad and not enough enforcement. That really sucks, for you. Maybe that is a county ordinance then where you live? Or the CO is playing king?
 
in my area certain towns let you ride on the road with traffic, atvs have a 25-35 mph speed limit. the is an atv park north of me with trails but its just a 5 mile loop.
 
Learn something new everyday! Nice link. Now I need anOther ORV. The reason I sold it bc you couldnt ride the damn thing anywhere!

thats why i have both... do you even have a quad or vike?

yes man theres like 200 people in my school and it takes 9 towns to make that up. Besides are roads are more dirt and holes than pavement, No fancy sports cars around here. Dont do nothing stupid like go on the TCH or nothing. ((besides the dirtbike (street legal ))) ;)!
 
must be nice!!!!!! new york is a PAIN IN THE A$$ when it comes to atvs! i love riding and ther are thousands of miles of snowmobile trails that are closed to atvs. ny dosent care about us all they care about is shuting us down! when i am older i am moving out west to ride the dunes and trails! i am so sick of NEW YORK STATE!!!!!!!
 
Thats my point of this thread. Seems alot of people dont have many places to ride. WTF. Yeah are stateland trails are off limits here in wny. Sure its the same everywhere else in this state. Just dont think that's right. They can ride horses all over on stateland but not atv's. I know the tree huggers love that we cant ride on statelands but I think state is missing out on some revenue here. Need to be like W VA. Hatfield and McCoy trails heard they are sweet.

I got rid of my ATV's 8 or so years ago for those reasons. our trail systems here have come a long ways since then. thinkin now of maybe returning to the sport of ATVs
