Just a wandering here.I have a spare 17 inch flat monitor here from my old desktop that isn't being used.I was thinking of selling it..but thought to myself..is there a way to connect it to my laptop and use it.I plugged it in and the cable to the port and I am getting no signal to it.I re started the laptop also but no go.Is there a procedure for me to get this monitor to work so I can have less strain on the eye's on the laptop screen.Surely there must be away..then I can get Netflix and watch movies on it at least...ANYONE out there that can help with this?????
 
What kind of cable are you using? Some laptops with have a button you can press while holding down the Fn key which will switch it over to your TV as well. Others you will have to go into your display properties and set it manually. If you really want and your laptop supports it you can even run dual monitors so that when you drag your mouse to one edge of your laptop screen it will move over onto the monitor screen. Post up any questions. I'll help you the best I can with this over the forum. I've ran dual monitors from a laptop, and also hooked TV's up to my laptop.
 
its the cable that comes with the monitor and only 1 place to plug it in to the laptop.I also bought a cable years back to plug into my laptop(Toshiba) and to my flat screen TV..All was connected,just didn't get a signal to go to the TV..so I gave up.
 
ANDY!!! Tried to run on my flat screen TV..cable plugged into the PC spot on the TV and into my laptop..switched to TV in the display,switched to dual monitors..nothin.If you hook to the TV,you have to have TV on and is it channel 3? Tried and nothin again.
STUMPED AGAIN!!!:o|
 
i just use a hdmi and set the input on the tv to hdmi,thinkin you need to find the input choice screen on youre tv,
 
Yup I agree with what dsc says, you'll need to switch the TV to the "PC" input or whatever they have it labeled as. Glad to hear you got it working. I knew it varied by laptops since mine is Fn F8.

EDIT: If you are using the cable I think you are, then you won't have sound to your TV. So if you really want to have fun, most TV's usually have a audio in as well for the PC part of it.Then all you need is a male to male headphone jack style cord and you can have sound on your TV from your laptop. :rockon:

I have the anolog cable ..sound wouldn't be there.Can run the sound of my computer external speakers for now,probably will pu the sound cable also to the TV,then can turn on my surround sound.
One thing my TV manual says is set the monitor resolution on the PC before connecting it to the TV.What resolution would be required and how??

I don't have a HDMI connector on the computer,otherwise I could get a HDMI TypeA cable that would run video and sound.

Did you get it working on your TV? The resolution shouldn't really matter in getting it to actually work. All the resolution will do is make it readable, well I guess unless your TV doesn't support a high resolution like you may be set on.

have not tried it again,I have been busy doing stuff outside these days.When I am not to tired and late at night..I may give it another go...

It stands for function I believe. It is found on most laptops so that certain key have a 2nd or 3rd use. For example when I hold the fn key, and my F1-F12 keys have another use, and then in a certain section I can hit certain letters like it's a number pad. Or I can also turn on number lock. So basically it is kind of like a SHIFT key, but instead of capital letters, it does other "functions".

Laptop keyboard layouts do vary where the Fn key is and the symbols. I was just using that pic as an example because that is my exact keyboard layout.

If you look closely at the picture below, next to the left ctrl is the Fn key. Looking under the F1-F12 keys you will also see other symbols under them. Those are what happens when you hit Fn and then those keys. It's hard to tell in the picture but all symbols in blue go along with the Fn key. Make sense?

OK, no rush, I'll keep watching the thread. Yea I kind of am somewhat of a computer geek, or maybe I should say certified computer geek lol. I have a 4 year Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science.
