I'm in the process of buying my first-ever sled, and this is my first-ever post. It's a 2002 Yamaha SX Viper 700 Triple. It appears to be in great condition. The only flaw is that the speedometer constantly registers 0 mph. Is there an easy fix for the speedometer?

This may help. Does everything else electrical work on the sled?

make sure the speed sensor and trigger gear are installed and connected. they should be under your secondary clutch on the end of the driveshaft. if that checks out check all your electrical connections

Thanks, FJViper and staggs65. Hopefully, I'll have the sled in my hands tomorrow and look it over thoroughly.

That happened on one of the sleds i bought, found the clutch side drive bearing was shot and took out the speedo sensor.

X2, This seems to happen to everyone at least once. Then we start checking our drive bearings on a regular basis. When the speedo stops working, then you slap your forehead and hope it has not ovaled out the area around the bearing.
Good luck!

I finally got the sled and was able to take a close look at it. I took photos of what I think is causing my speedometer problem. What I believe is (was?) the drive shaft bearing is reflected in a mirror.
I assume my first step should be to order a new bearing. Is there anything else I should be replacing or checking? In a separate thread on the TY Forum, someone said to remove the tension on the track before doing this. How do I go about doing that?
Thanks to everyone for pointing a real greenhorn in the right direction.

ouch that would certainly cause a problem. I'd be checking the seal and lower bearing on the chaincase side as well. for that matter they obviously didnt check bearings so I would be checking all of them. as far as the track tension there are tensioning bolts at the rear of the skid and you have to loosen the rear axle too. there are good write ups on just about all of the maintenance for these sleds in the tech sections here. Both here http://www.totallyamaha.com/Totallyamaha/mainTechIndex.html and in the forum tech sections. I'd also be looking at cleaning the carbs and cleaning and adjusting the powervalves and cleaning the clutches and checking for just general wear on any parts. These are normal preseason maintenance items you will need to do every year (maybe even mid season depending how many miles you rack up) so you might as well learn how to do them now. read the tech info here and try searching subjects and ask questions as needed and you will have it ready for snow before you know it. Oh yeah, and welcome to the site.

I had the same thing happen to me om my ol viper. make sure you get a new or used pickup sensor and change out if it is damaged from bearing being out of line and gear rubbing. good luck!
