In going through my "new" '98 SRX, I made the mistake of "cleaning" the air filter element. Now I only used soap and water, but it was obvious that age had taken its toll on the filter, and I was only making it worse.
Now I've seen the detrimental effects of using aftermarket filters on a sled (e.g. - K&N cone-type individual filters (as an example only - I love K&N!) will pull warm air from under the hood vs. cold air from outside the cowl) & so far I can't find where major filter manufacturers make filters for older sleds like mine.
So here is my question: What replacement elements are you using? Have you ever replaced yours? If I am wrong about major mfgs. not making filters for these old sleds, can you provide a source?
I found some element material that you have to cut-to-fit from Dennis Kirk, because now I NEED to put something in there (It wasn't totally disintegrated, but compromised), but want to see what others are using.

C'M ON! I know filters aren't the most impressive topic, but isn't NOW the time to give them a thought? Anyone? Buehler??
I'm interested in knowing what others say on this. Sorry I cant help you out, but I'm subscribing to this.

Yeah it's hard to believe nobody has had a say on it yet...MBllnr said:I'm interested in knowing what others say on this. Sorry I cant help you out, but I'm subscribing to this.
Hope it doesn't mean their intake is naked!

I thought about it (stock repl.), but that "foam" (sorta like the old speaker grilles) just doesn't handle "air" all that well. Between time and dry rot, they just crumble. That means there are tiny foam balls being sucked through the intake process... not good.SRX500kid said:me too! but i think i would just order a stock replacement
I haven't received the elements from Dennis Kirk yet. I'll give an opinion on it when I do, and then I guess see how they fare over time...

I woudn't go with cone filters on a carbed 2 stroke unless your running grass drags or run only in warm temps as they are hard to get jetted correctly for winter riding and or keep the reliabilty most of us want on the trail. Stock would be the safest way to go..... my 2 cents

The rock catcher insert on my '01 is holding up fine. I still have the original that came with the sled but it was replaced with a more corse one that I cut out from some samples I recieved from a supplier shortly after purchasing the sled new.
Going commando isn't a problem IMO if you aren't breaking trail or playing in powder. I've only had it blocked with snow once or twice when breaking trail and it's easy enough to pull, shake loose the snow and re-install. Not sure you'd have the same ease of cleaning three volocity stack filters.
You also have the noise and mess factor running without an airbox on a trail sled.

The filter material I got from Dennis Kirk was made by Uni. Was able to cut 2 out of a sheet for about $12! Plus a couple UNI stickers...devinzz1 said:you can buy bulk foam from brands such as uni and no-toil that you can cut and shape the way you want it. plus there safe and easy to clean.
