Hello. I have a 97 600SX twin, and I just put a new belt on on it. The old belt was starting to fray so I thought I would replce it. I got a new belt from my Yamaha dealer, but when I installed it, it sits about a 1/4" below the top of the seconhdary. The old belt sat about 1/8" above the secondary. I double checked the part number, and it is the correct belt, so I checked the old belt. It is not the OEM spec belt. How do I adjust the secondary so I get the 1/8" ckearance on top of the secondary?

Pull the 2ndary off, look on the back side of it there are 3 bolts on the back, remove a washer or 2 as needed and put it back on to check for correct belt tension

Snopro is close. You actually want to add washers under the 3 little bolts, effectively shortening the bolts, allowing the secondary to close more. The bolts push the sheaves apart, longer bolts, open further lower belt height.
Just remove the bolts and set belt on sheaves, just to see where it is riding. I have a secondary with no bolts, and perfect belt height.

Also check the ends of the bolts for wear they should have an unthreaded tip on them. These can wear as well as the plate the bolt tips contact. I had some that were quite worn and the plate had pretty deep indentations where the bolt tips rest against it.

So I just went out and installed washers....and more washers....and more washers. It wasnt getting any better. So I just typed in 89X-17641-01, and low and behold it is for a Bravo!!! My local Yamaha dealer sucks!!!! Anyone need a belt for a Bravo?

Like I said, remove them completely and test fit belt in clutch. That would have waved u some mess in around. But, now u know how to adjust it.

Sad to say but I never trust those guys. I always look the part number up online, even when I'm going to the dealer. Nothing ticks me off more then getting all the way home and finding out it's the wrong part.

The correct Yamaha belt p/n# is 89L-17641-01-00 v-belt - and when adjusted correctly with this belt it should be "flush" on the top of the secondary sheaves (flat top side on v-belt)- not above. The 8DN belts are a little harder compund belts (srx belt-or all tripples w/higher rpm) that may affect your top RPM's and those are supposed to ride above the sheaves because of the top cog design...
never ran a 8DN belt on a 600 twin - Yammiegod - won't he need to add a little tip weight to his cam arms if he does that???
