We have 3 older SX700's, 97 and 98's, and a 98 SRX700. Each year before starting the sleds. I've dribbled some gas down through the airbox to "prime" the engines so I don't end up pulling them over 20X or more to get them fired.

Last year, the SRX backfired setting the sled on fire, some anxious moments there, I can tell you. These machines once started always start on the first or second pull.

I'm not sure whether it's a issue of empty float bowl or what, but I'd be interested in hearing how some of you address this initial startup. I don't intend to repeat what happened last year.

I usually put a couple drops of premix down each spark plug hole. You might have to do it 2 or 3 times until it stays running but its a lot easier than pulling 50 times.
 
here is how I got my SRX fired up in 2 pulls this time after sitting since March and fogged.

Put fresh fuel in tank.Opened the shut off valve from tank.Took all plugs out and pulled gently 10 to 20 times to get the bowls full of fuel without fighting compression mode.Put a little premix in each cylinder,plugs back on and pulled with full choke.Fired a bit first pull,second time it was running.Little or no effort doing it this way.
 
If you fogged the motor for storage, keep the airbox off the carbs so when it's time to fire the sled back up all you need to do is squirt some premix into the carbs and light them up!
 
Definitely premix down the cylinders a couple times. Once I get them running it's enough to put them in the garage to get the carbs cleaned so I can keep them running smoothly.

Tried this today, worked like a charm. Didnt even need pre-mix down the holes and my 93 vmax-4 fired in two pulls after putting plugs back in.

good to hear this..always looking for an easier way to start these sleds after sitting for 8 months.It used to take me like 80 pulls years back dry carbs and not removing plugs..this way is much quicker and easier for sure... ;)!

so i'm confused, how does this work? No compression means no vacuum impulse to run the carb's fuel diaphram pump. In theory, yanking on the rope with the plugs out on a non-efi sled shouldn't pump any fuel at all.

I'm thinking it probably has more to do with the premix down the hole than the yanking before hand.
 
There is still crankcase pressure to draw the mix in. Next time when you put new fuel lines on, move the primary back and forth by hand. You can watch the fuel move through the lines.
 
yep still some crankcase pressure and why should I pull like a bull with plugs in when I can just pull gently without fighting compression .Even if you just put gas down the cylinder at first with dry carbs..it still won't fire up and run,may take 3 to 4 attempts until you rotate the crank a few times creating suction of gas to the bowls.Works great,this is the first time I have tried this and am impressed I didn't wrench my arm pulling on the rope.
 
I've been starting my sleds like this for a long time. Works great! We were at Haydays this year, walked past a 600sx that the guy said had been sitting for 6 years, so he didn't know if it ran. I smelled the gas and it smelled OK, so Nicko pulled on it a few times, til his arm hurt. I pulled the plugs, pulled on it about 8 times easy, put the plugs back in and it fired up and ran on the first pull. I said to the guy, OK where's my starting fee?
