Belts new, are you sure its the right belt? How does it sit in the secondary? Are clutch's lined up (center to center and off set)? Just thinking out loud and kicking around ideas. Belt deflection? I was alway taught that the track should just creep along while the skid is in the air and you should be able to stop it with a finger. And restart the creeping with a sl push of the finger on track.

Im sure its the right belt, at least for a stock SRX700, I dont know if the aftermarket clutch makes a difference. clutches are straight.
As far as checking the deflection and everything ill have to finish up the skid and get it back in first, so i can rev it up and see where the belt seats itself....
At first you said an idle hang would be from a long pull when hot, then said if it revs up and hangs when cool, its an air leak.
are you leaning towards air leak or clutch?
Would a bad crank seal or base gasket cause this problem???

Strange that rpm's are jumping up from 2500. Is it smooth from idle up to 2500? But... like the guys said, get the belt and track on. Follow the throttle cable to the carbs, when you depress the throttle are the springs operating smoothly on the carb rack? Is anything binding up? Choke slides working like they should? Throttle cable free play set? Remove the top caps from the carbs and make sure the slides are operating smoothly. Make sure the allen screws below the slide linkages are in place and tight, and that the linkages are hooked up properly. Also, what were the numbers on the pilots and mains and jet needle clip positions? Just to make sure you're where you need to be.

Idle is smooth up to 2200 or so, then it jumps on its own to 4000 and stays there till i hit the kill switch just for a sec to bring it down.
It seems to run great, starts great...
-The carb rack springs are working correctly
-choke is adjusted and slides work properly
-no binding
-freeplay in throttle cable
-slides operating smoothly
I didnt take note of the jet sizes, I will when i pull them back off.
NOTE
When it revs up on its own, the carbs arent opening on there own, (its not like a ghost is pulling the throttle)
The carbs stay closed
To try and explain, if you watched a video of the carbs, linkage, etc. with no sound, you would assume it is idling, then turn the sound on and its actually at 4K

I was leaning twoard clutch, just throwing out ideas on the idle hang. But we can all guess the best we can from previous experience and knowledge. Your best bet is to get the sled back together, reclean carbs checking jetting and needles ect.... then clean clutches and see what happens. The fact that its after market clutch stuff makes me think it could be there. But im as stumped as you untill we get a fix. LOL! Just keep at it these guys here will get ya squared away sooner then later.

First of all, ive been part of lots of Forums, and already this is BY FAR the most helpful place yet! Thanks for all the input and ideas!
Im going to finish the skid when my shock and bearings come in, get it back together, go through it all again, clean again, and i will post my results.
stay tuned... haha

I agree with blue that its quite odd to see a comet on a 98-02 srx. even if its not the source of this problem I'd look for a stock primary

Is a Comet not good? is it an aftermarket or like a cheap O or something someone nabbed from something else maybe?

comets were common upgrades on the vintage stuff but the stock clutch for your sled needs no upgrading. and your issue is a little strange for me, reving up does sound like a lean condition in the pilot circuit but how you describe it jumping from 2500 to 4000 throws me off.

If that comet is in good shape when I clean it I will have to try it out and see how it performs, then ill go from there
And Staggs-
I will try a better description:
-from 1500rpms to about 2200rpms, I can lightly rev it and it will return to 1500 as it should as long as i dont go past that 2200.
-if I go past 2200rpms at all, It will bring itself up to 4000rpms and stay right there, that is unless i hit the kill switch only for a second, then it comes back down to 1500.

OK, to me that sounds like a typical idle hang. first thing is pull them carbs back out and make sure they are spic n span clean. Check what the jets are and fuel screw settings and post back. sometimes you can clean them and put them back in just to have them clog back up from crap in the lines and fuel pump. these triples have very small pilots compared to twins and a very susceptible to clogging up. My friend did a 600 sx for a guy last year and had to go through the carbs 3 times before they stayed clean.
post back with specifics on your jetting and settings.

Is the clutch engaging when this happens and does it disengage when you hit the kill switch? A real stiff spring will give you throttle hang more than the stock one ie heal clicker settup.Try the choke to idle it down just for fun.

I will have to try the choke to bring it doen, tho im headed out for the day, ill post back on that...
BLUEWHO-
It revs to 4000 and holds there, the clutch doesnt start to engage until what seems like 4200 +/-

That should rule out the clutch must be the carbs or a faulty cdi if the tor systom is working or bypassed properly.Good luck keep us posted what you find.

It is the carbs. Please refer to post #12 and report back.

Well i got the new shock on the skid, put the Polaris Xtra-10 in, flipped the front shock mounts, put the belt back on, dropped her on the ground, fired her up, and it acts as it should. No more idle hang or self revving!
I think the belt was still down in the secondary a little and thus too loose on the primary.
and without the skid on i couldnt spin the track to get the belt to settle.
BY THE WAY
I brought her out in the yard (grass) and run her around and Holy Sh*t! this thing runs!
Skiis in the sky 1/4 throttle, and hold the h3ll on!
And the XTRA-10 with front shock mount flip sits perfectly level!!!
Thanks for all the help!!!
