what would be a reasonable price for a vmax 4 750 or 800 engine with elec carbs clutch pipe. i found a couple on craigslist anywhere from 300 to a grand. i want to build either a snomoquad or put the engine in a new chassis.
i found one the other day but the guy wont answer its a 750 has all electrical and has clutch for 350 bucks comp is in the 130 range in all cyls has spark ect according to the add but the guy never answers his phone. the one time he did answer his phone he said his grand son hit a tree and destroyed the pipes and chassis and he is sick of seeing the motor.YAMMIEGOD3:16 said:800 Worth Way More. 3:16 (yammie Tony)
im going to look at a complete sled 94 750 has 9k miles 600 bucks guys claims no odd engine noise im going to bring my comp tester and camera thingy to look at the cylinder walls and what not. how far did these motors go?Rustman said:350 is a deal for that motor. 800 motor is better but if your gonna run it stock that 750 motor will treat ya just fine. Better if its from 93-94, has more hp. Clutch alone is worth 150-250 depending on shape. I sold an 800 motor last year with carbs for $1300, that was mid-season and prices were at their peak.
thats a 92? i do not know much about vmax 4s so if you could help me indicate the year? my main question is though if im getting into some trouble buying this sled. it definitly shows some weather damage i highly doubt it was stored/fogged properly i mean i never fog my sleds but i do occasionally fire them up in the summer just to make sure a rat did chew a wire or somthing and to make sure it have some fresh lube. i know you said the cranks come out of phase id imagine that would cause some balance issue and some hellish vibration? if worst comes i can always take the engine apart and sell the cyls and other parts to make my money back i guess so i might not be taking a loss on this deal but i still have my doubts about it. i just dont want to turn down such an offer i always wanted a vmax 4.Rustman said:thats a '92, lowest hp for the vmax-4's. Stock pipes on it? Main problem with that motor is the crank coming out of phase. Check pipes for unburned fuel. Motor will show good compression even with a spun crank. You can also check spark plugs for what would appear to be an excessively rich situation. Be particularly wary if one side of the motor seems much richer than the other, this could be hard to spot as the 92's at stock jetting were very rich anyways. 500 bucks and you shouldn't lose money. Those motors can go for a long time as Opsled has stated, I have one showing 33,000 km's which is over 16,000 miles. I have two others showing 24,000 and some change. any other questions just ask.
i think i will buy it take it out on the bay a few times and part it in the spring. that way i can have the satisfaction of riding a 4 cyl sled and still make money.Rustman said:there's a few ways to tell the years, first off the engine size, 750's are 92,93,94. Color scheme is also an indicator. 92 were grey, pink and black. 93's had some red in them, but were noticeably diffferent from 92. The front TSS also changed in '93, they became top adjustable whereas the 92's needed the skiis removed to make adjustments. 95 was the start year of the 800 motor and last year of mainly black. 96 was red and 97 had pro-action rear skids in them and a hydraulic brake. There are a score of other differences but those should get ya started. 92 had lowest hp, increased in 93,94, increased also with the 800 in '95.
Surpisingly enough, most people do not report bad vibration when cranks are spun, engine just feels sluggish, not much performance at all. Lots of unburned gas in the pipe of the side that is out of phase. If you want the sled to run, I wouldnt buy that one, it would be for parts. You mentioned putting the engine in another project, if that is your intention then really you are just looking for a motor. A cylinder has to worth 100 bucks x4 and if the crank aint spun thats worth 3 or 400 bucks. Windy is worth about 100 bucks with no cracks. carbs are another 100 at least, rear clutch is the weak part of the 750's, but they work ok if maintained properly. They sell for 50-100 bucks. Primary clutch is for vmax-4's only so they are quite hard to find and could be worth a bit. In 95 they changed they primary to one more similar to the ones used now. Still a vmax-4 stand alone though. those are the major parts, and I think your ahead of the game already.
