No brake light?!

Ok here's my issue,
My XLV has a seat and taillight from a 98 VMAX on it which is fine since it uses the same taillight housing as the XLV's original. The only problem is my brake light doesn't work. The running light is on, bulb is new, headlight is on, gauge lights are on every thing works as it should except the brake light. I went through and tested for continuity through all wires/circuits involved with the brake light and nothing, no resistance anywhere on the machine.. The oil light doesn't come on either. I'm stumped with this one... Any help would be appreciated.
 
Check your brake light switch on the handlebars. It should read OL when not touching the brake lever and should show continuity when the lever is pulled. As for the oil light try grounding the wire and the light should come on. Hope that helps. Chris
 
It might have the same or similar lever from my old 95 Vmax. There is a brass contact in the switch by the lever that can wear or break. Sometimes you can fix it or you might have to replace the whole switch.
 
Revisiting this as I found the issue.

After studying the service manual for the XLV for a couple days, I found nothing. I ended up unwrapping the harness on my XLV parts sled and an SRV parts sled and comparing the two. The XLV, coming with electric start from the factory (I removed it) has an ignition switch with 5 wires for CDI(two), starter relay, power and the brake light circuit power. Why Yamaha did this, I don't know. The SRV ignition switch (never came with e-start) has only the two wires to interrupt the CDI.

So upon further digging, I found that the power wire for the brake light on the SRV, which is solid green, is spliced into the blue wire from the voltage regulator (bingo, power source). On the XLV, this wire is brown but both use the same location in the low oil light plug. This brown wire is run to the ignition switch as mentioned above.

Splice brown wire into blue wire from voltage regulator and BINGO! I have a brake light.
