I just bought a 97 mountain max mod. There isnt a vin on the block or the tunnel since its an eckholm. Is there any place else were there would be another vin? Also how do I tell whether its a 97 crankcase or newer? Thanks.

there will be an id number on the right hand side of the crankcase(recoil side) on the rear portion. look directly below the coolant hose running to the head.
lacking this,(it should be there) the only way to distinguish the 97 blocks from the 98 and ups would be to count the bolts securing the two case halves. engine out and upside down.

The only number I found is 8ch00-Y-1. How many bolts does the 97, and 98 up have? Thanks.
that number denotes the sx engine from 97. not surprising. could be an engine swap or someone simply longtracked the sx chassis and called it a mtn max. not much difference between the two except track and skid. yours having the aftermarket tunnel, anything is possible. measure your ski stance.
seems like around 14 bolts originally in 97, but its been awhile. 6 more were added for 98 and up along with a different crank bearing configuration.i think the newer crankcase castings had "ears" or "lobes" evident under the intakes and exhaust.

Are the crankcases all identical from 98-03? will stators from 01 up fit in 98 -00 cases?
stators are interchangeable between all 700sx and 600 sx tripple sleds with single headlight ignition. the later dual bulb ignition uses its own stator. This stator is not interchangeable with viper/srx stators.

Are the 97 cranks unreliable? What differences are there in cranks? Thanks.
cant tell you anything about crossing over the ignitions and fitment except that the wiring harnesses are different as well as a few other electrical components.
97 was the first year in the triple format and yamaha experienced a few failures on the cranks and the bearings. not enough to warrant a recall, but it got the attention of the higher ups to rethink the setup. thats why the bottom end was redesigned for 98 and that design has carried through the subsequent years.
the new style bearing could be retrofitted to the 97 cases with some modification. if yours already has higher mileage, chances are you got a good one.
one thing about yamaha is they always addressed reliability issues. they realised potential failure in the cranks and made them better. too bad polaris still hasnt figured things out.
