Speeding up my SS440

I have heard going to a 40 mm mikuni round slide can make more power..
Where else can I help it pick up???
Also interested in a modern skid in the rear...
Blow this thread up with any and all ideas!!!!
I am going to a grass drag meet with the sled in mostly stock form on saturday
Will post results or my baseline and go from there!!!

I know you dont have time now, but look at getting into the clutching on it, a comet clutch with some aggressive weights/spring will wake it up alot.

yes 40mm works great ........motors respond well to porting 116'' 84-89 phazer skids are pretty much a bolt in .............ypz clutching works great on these sleds ...........yet to get a comet to perform as well as the ypz set up ..........i have 2 of these sleds i have built for oval racing

Id love to have a big suspension long track skid under this thing!
Also it already has a comet clutch but no idea on how to do the weights or where to find them...

Hi Dan, when you get a chance, take the clutch off and take out the weights and see what color spring is in there. we can go from there.

use the comet specs for the VK 540 of the 90's i will have to look in my notes on which spring to use or grab the clutch off the shelf and take a loo again if you want a longer track .......121'' then phazerII skid and track if you are just looking for more travel then the phazer 116'' skid is the way to go i ude the stock skids in mine but they are both rebuilt to new condition

What year phazers??? lots of phazer parts on cl right now...

I just put the clutch on so I guess the sooner i try to take it off the easier...any way to see the spring with it on or no...
Great looking Sleds too!
Just took mine out (got some snow last night)and it feels good I can get it up to and maintain 50mph and still have half throttle left...this is at around 5000rpm maintaining speed...maybe leave it alone?
If i throttle it. It jumps past seven but starting drifting sidways

If there is more snow i can report back....Also grass/snow drags tomorrow so i'll have a mph for you guys tomorrow night

Ok 54mph at 500 feet in grass/snowdusting
Primary seems to engage around 2500-3000
Many other vintage sledders thee and told me looked like a gold spring in the primary clutch
Also found out my belt is worn/too narrow as it does not rest near the top of the secondary
Had the chance to try a blue spring but it appears the end of the clutch is mushroomed or just too corroded center bolt and the 6 smaller screws out the outside clutch plate still doesn't come off of shaft.
going to fiddle with it now...

Got cover off
Silver spring...
Installed a new belt (much wider than what I had) lol
and the softer of the 2 comet purple springs
WOW NEW SLED!!!

I don't have a 440 but I have several SRV's and a 83 V Max A very common swap is the Pol. xtra 10. A world of differance over the older 116 track stuff in the 81 SRV. and quite a bit better then what the 83 VM had. Very easy swap and their around everywhere pretty cheap.
