Just picked up an 02 Vmax 600 triple, beautiful shape it seems, just need some snow now. One thing I noticed while poking around that the previous owner had some sort of air box mod done to it, then it seems he changed his mind and blocked off the drilled air holes he made in the airbox with a piece of cardboard. Also the intake part of the hood had foam inserted into it. And inside the air box, is there supposed to be a plate between the upper and lower part of the airbox? If so there is none in mine. I've posted a few pictures of the sled and the airbox.

X2 on mods switched back to stock. Have not owned/worked on specifically 02 vmax but all the 00+ air boxes consisted of base,1st cover with 3 large circle intake hole,2nd cover with rectangular intake holes and final cover consisting of a frame with foam insert.....IF my memory isnt failing me! May only be one or the other (circle/rectangle) Some sleds had a foam deal along the bottom of the hood in front of handle bars. On others this would be part of a cold air kit. I would check parts fische on port yamaha to try to figure out what you have."covered with cardboard" would concern me. When doing the "airbox mod" or cold air kit carbs setting need to be changed. Make sure your carb setup matches what your running. If cardboard comes loose and starts freeflowing air you might have problems, I would get some nuts/bolts, plugs or silicone if the cardboard looks scetchy. Those pics might help as well

I checked the parts diagram online, I don't seem a foam insert in the hood. What air boxes are compatible with the 02 Vmax? I might find pick one up on eBay, the existing one looks like it might be gutted

that airbox mod is on this site. And I think the piece of cardboard was there so nothing would go inside while in storage since the filter and cage isnt on.

the foam piece on the gauge pod is a bender cold air kit.

When I look into the airbox from the top, it's just empty, I can see the opening for the carbs and that's it, according to the online parts diagram there should some sort of spacer in the middle somewhere.

YAY PICS! Foam on hood looks just like the stock foam on the girlfreinds 00 SxR 700, X2 on air box mod on this site, look in snowmobile tech pages. If carb settings are correct for a stocker (needles/jetting-clip position) I would say get a top and "cage"(frame with foam filter) Take a look down inside air box I THINK theres only supposed to be like 3 holes in the bottom, some guys drill more.

the piece in your pics with the cardboard on it is the middle piece. you dont have the top on the airbox in your pics. Is what we see all you have

Not saying his VMAX is stock, just that it looks just like the stock 00 Sxr that I have.

I actually have the cage or filter element I just realized now that I didn't incude it in my pics...it's up now, factory air filter element but it has more foam, glued around the lip of it to make a better seal I guess. Plus from reading through that airbox mod write up, my baffle plate is not in there.

the hood part does indeed appear to be stock looking at the parts fiche for that sled.Devilin AblueDress! said:Not saying his VMAX is stock, just that it looks just like the stock 00 Sxr that I have.

I just looked at the parts diagram, the plate in the middle is missing, not sure if that not being there would cause more harm then good. I guess I should get rid of that cardboard or block it off.

Reading the air box mod how to (link I posted) says to drill similar holes in that part your missing. I would inventory what the carbs are set for and go from there. Tech pages will have factory carb settings. If carbs are set up stock then get another air box or parts to correct what you have. If settings support air box mods then either run it as is or set back up to factory and correct air box.....good and confused yet? If carbs are set up for box mod and carboard is restricting air flow you may end up running way rich, fouling plugs and killing mileage. Either way I think cardboard BAD idea. Could start coming apart and get sucked into carbs, at least get some stiff plastic or plexiglass to replace cardboard.

Thanks, I'm gonna read up on the carb settings since I'm not familiar with that. I'll probaly order that baffle plate that is missing,re-drill and stay with the cold air kit....if the settings are for that.Is there a handy link to the carb settings I'll need to read up on?

Sorry for beating a dead horse, but I think I'll put the intake back to stock. On a stock Vmax is there a foam insert under the guage pod like the one in the pic? And is it difficult to determine if the jetting was altered on the carbs? Have to come off? I found the factory settings in the Tech section.
