Pull my guts out everytime the sled sits for an extended period of time. Beginning of the season is always a bugger. Even if it sits for 2-3 weeks during season. But once I do get it going, it starts great on a few pulls and idles according to specs. Carbs are clean and always run non-oxy fuel. 8,000 miles on original equipment. One trick to get it started is to tip it on its side for 30 seconds. All stock except for a M10.

And when push comes to shove to start year, a little gas in the cylinders to get it to pop and suck fuel.

Any help appreciated. Thought about double checking the floats in the bowls.

Thanks

Matt

Really? Glad to know I'm not the only one pulling my guts out each November. Seems odd. I'm not sure I'd get it started in the fall without pulling plugs or tipping it.

I have found the best way to start is to remove plugs. Pull motor over 10 times or so, replace plugs. Pull again, she'll fire.

Theres a few threads about the 2 common things you can do. Choke plunger mod has its own thread with detailed directions and others have had success switching to the red head style fuel pump.

check your choke... see if your plungers are even opening, i know on dads sled you could flip the choke all the way on and it would not do anything really... adjusted the choke and the most ive pulled is 5 times in -30ish

yes the SRX's are a beast to start.Even after I did the plunger mod..if it sits awhile in the cold..takes me around 10 pulls.I change the pump last year also..go figure. My SXR600 usually takes 1 good pull..2 max...and it is running. Can never figure why they both are different.

Mine will take about 20-30 pulls at the beginning of the season as I drain all gas from it. Nature of the beast. 3 - 4 pulls after sitting all night in -30 temps.

Red head fuel pump on mine did not help the starting issue either, still takes at least 10 pulls after a cold night. For comparison my buddy's red head 700 starts with 1 or 2 pulls.

Shutting the sled off with the choke helps for the next cold start.
When the sled sits for an extended period a little fuel down a spark plug hole works great.

I have done all the mods on my 2002 SRX and it starts very well.
-shorten choke plungers
-Viper carbs[have larger fuel enrichment circuit]
-Red Head fuel pump

I am in the process of installing a Polaris XCR800 TMX38 carb rack on my SRX. I have wired in the polaris TPS sensor, narrowed the carb spacing, and modified the float bowl nuts for clearance....here we go...back to square one!

Thanks for the tips. I'm delighted this isn't unique to my SRX. I've never been able to tell difference between draining bowls for offseason and leaving gas sit as long as it's good gas and not gumming up. I think I'll stick with my bag of tricks and just plan to ride more often!! :letitsnow Off to a crummy start in MN. Thanks again.

One last thing to note. I did add a coolant heater a few years ago so now at least when it sits for a few weeks in January it pulls over easier!

These sleds seem difficult to start unless everything is perfect.

Dry (not gas soaked) plugs with no fouling
Perfect amount of choke
Spark plug cap resistor gone bad or plug cap corrosion buildup
Weather? My sled doesn't seem to start on damp days as well as dry ones

If the sled doesn't start in 8 pulls, I figure its flooded. I pull the 3 plugs, hit them with a propane torch until they're dry and warm. If that doesn't start it I spray some starting fluid in the carbs. Some say its hard on the motor, I've used it to start many sleds and ATVs over the years and have never had a problem.

Also, if your oil setting is too high, excess oil might make it difficult to start your sled

First start of the season. I have always did the fuel down spark plug hole for mine. Well except the first year where I counted my pulls to more then 100. ha ha ha

I was thinking of blowing in the gas overflow tube this year. Would this be easier the removing the plugs?

pull plugs, pull the recoil a dozen times to load fuel to carbs..a tad of fuel down hole..pull and it starts.

My plugs are $10 each. Last time I poured fuel down the jugs, they fouled.

I get my plugs from Royal Dist. Cheaper then $10..maybe Can Tire would charge that price..or the dealer..they really rip you off bad on plugs..think they charged me like $50 for 3 plugs with tax..never gone back to dealer since.
