starting
Even after sitting a week or more I don't even pull on it untill I squirt some premix down the plug holes.I am to old to be pulling these over 20 or more times. I usually keep an old charcoal lighter container with some premix. It is easier to squirt in with out pouring it all over the place.

My Royal Dist. has the BR9ECS for $8.99 plus shipping. What Royal are you talking about?

I drained the float bowls and let it sit for 9 months. It took me 22 pulls a few days ago

one thing I don't understand and that is why Yamaha has put us through all this pulling. Why did they not put electric start on all sleds.I have never had a sled with it yet...for the price of their sled..a few 100 bucks more wouldn't of killed sales. 22 pulls by hand or 5 sec cranking on electric starter...which seems better.tomseal6 said:I drained the float bowls and let it sit for 9 months. I got 4 plugs from the dealer for about $25 tax in. only reason I got 4 was because 2 of the spares the guy gave me when I bought the sled were new.

I used to have a hell of a time starting my sled. Ever since I replaced my stater it starts way easier. Just a thought.

I was thinking of blowing in the gas overflow tube this year. Would this be easier the removing the plugs?
Easier is kind of relative. I find removing/installing the plugs easier than tugging the rope. With the plugs removed, cranking speed increases which helped fill the bowls in 3-5 tugs vs. 10+.
But if the plugs are out anyhow, a squirt of pre-mix in each hole with a mustard bottle will get it lit in 1 pull. This may need to be repeated once more to fill the float bowls.
Of course this is all for pre-season first start. I've never had an issue with starting during the season regardless of temperature as long as it doesn't sit for more than 3-4 weeks. Given our crappy seasons of late, it has sat for that long and another dose of pre-mix gets it lit in one pull without repeating.
...and I'm still using the 13 year old spark plugs the sled was delivered with new.

yeah I believe that, plugs should last many years as these sleds don't put on as many miles a vehicle does and I don't remember for a long time changing plugs in my truck and it fires up flawlessly..guess I won't have to buy new plugs again for the amount of miles I put on my SRX...savings againsnomofo said:...and I'm still using the 13 year old spark plugs the sled was delivered with new.

From your answer I gather even if I pressure the fuel tank I still have to pull lots more then 8-10 times? That would be my threshold vs the fuel in plug holes method.

Maybe not. I have in the past wrapped a rag and then my hand around the fill spud (kinda like blowing on a duck call) and blew into the tank to pressurize it. This was on an XCR I had with clear fuel lines and it worked.
I understand the apprehension of squirting fuel into the plug holes since it can get messy. IMO - without the resistance from compression (spark plugs removed) the faster cranking speed did help. But if the plugs are out anyways, a little squirt in each hole eliminates the need to tug the cord more than once or twice.
My 1970 Olympique had to be started with fuel down the plug hole and quick start sprayed in the carb throat but never my 81 SRX or 86 SRV. Come full circle now to a 2000 SRX. Way to go Yamaha engineers. Do you think a primer would of helped? Geesh.

or just plain electric start so we can just turn the key and crank the crap out of it...SRX_700 said:My 1970 Olympique had to be started with fuel down the plug hole and quick start sprayed in the carb throat but never my 81 SRX or 86 SRV. Electric start would only be something else to fix. Having 2 Seadoos, they are a pain as you cannot really hold the starter longer than 10 seconds or all hell can break loose. Been there, done that.

IMO - having to drain the float bowls for summer storage due to E10 is the root-cause.

Faster cranking speed certainly helps. I installed electric start on one of my SRX's and as a test, I left the fuel lines off the carbs and placed them in a shallow tray. With plugs removed, hit the starter and within 3-5 secs. full fuel flow from the pump. This was done at the beginning of last season. As posted earlier, leave your plugs out and pull motor over 10 times to prime the fuel system.

Went to the cottage this weekend with my father and 1.5 year old son. Get the sleds and fishing shack ready for the season. Fill her up with gas (I store with tank empty) Plugs out, pull motor 15 times, plugs back in pull 20 times, nothing. Try again and pull 30 times with plugs out this time. Plugs back in, nothing. Went back to put gas in plug holes. Idled for 3 seconds. More gas in plug holes then starts for good.
So for me this is the only way I got it going. Yes a starter would be nice. lol

I'm in the same boat and very PO'ed at the moment. Every year the first start is the same as you mentioned...but still unable to get it running yet. Have done everything everyone has mentioned. Once it does start....two pulls, three at the most for the rest of the season. I know its getting fuel as the plugs got wet. Changed them, pulled on it with them out a few times and throttle WFO. Some fuel in the cylinders....runs for 2-3 seconds then done. Bout ready to stuff a rag in the tank and flame her up. Is there a drain plug in the crank case? I feel like I have pulled it over so many times its gotta be full. Easily 100+ pulls.PhatboyC said:When to the cottage this weekend with my father and 1.5 year old son. do the choke enrichment mod, remove .5 to 1 mm off the end of the enricher to allow more fuel in.Mine still took a few pulls carbs empty. Yesterday i pull to start,it was in the garage above freezing(34F)..but the day before I used choke to shut her off.But after a run yesterday, left it outside a few hours and wouldn't you know it..15 pulls to start. My 600 2 to 4 pulls..still can't accept that.

2-3 psi in the fuel tank vent tube will fill the carb bowls but still allow the needle valve to shut off the fuel to keep from flooding. If you use the air hose like I do (a bit dangerous if you over pressurize it) fuel will come out the overflow lines if you happen to hit it too hard. If you are having to pull more then 3-5 times after that, something isn't right. Don't forget electrical issues can also make them hard to start.
